Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
Who wins this epic bout?
Mike Tyson has power, but so did/does Briggs, he's actually been on a roll lately, beating everyone in his path.

Wait. It's not 'nuff.
Somebody else here was recently marveling over Briggs "being on a roll" and beating "everyone" in his path.
You do realize that Briggs had been on a roll only because he's been stepping into the ring with a string of virtual non-entities since he had his head handed to him by Vitali Klitschko over 7 years ago.
Do you consider that meaningful and a reason to believe that he could upend Tyson?
Since he turned pro about 25 years ago, Briggs has pretty much consistently failed at the top level.
Maybe the win over Liakovich (a come from behind variety type against a pretty mediocre alphabet champ) and the very tainted, very undeserved victory over Foreman qualify as the best of his career.
Throw in Mercer too, but it was an over the hill Mercer.
Briggs knows his own limitations. That why he's played it safe since Klitschko.
He's done nothing in his career to suggest that he could deal with a prime Tyson.
"Epic bout" my arse.
Re: Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
His W/L record can't lie.
He performed horribly against Klitschko, but to be fair, his usual is a lot better then that.
He's just rather inconsistent when it comes to the big dogs.
Look how well he's doing against Lennox Lewis here:
Eventually he just... started sucking, but he was dominating the beginnings of the fight and there were several times when he nearly knocked Lewis out.

Re: Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
It can't lie perhaps, but it can deceive.
For instance just last week we had Gilberto Ramirez undefeated vs Habib Ahmed...also undefeated.
Now in spite of the fact that both of these men had both won all of their fights they were not created equal, and when they got in the ring it was very obvious.
It ain't just how many fights you've won. It's WHO you beat.

And in his quarter century in the ring, Brigg has basically beaten no one of note who wasn't on Medicare or simply mediocre at best.
If Briggs' mouth was the equivalent of boxing success, he would be the longest reigning champion in history.
He talks a great game but hasn't really produced when he's been given the opportunities.
He's been a grade B fighter.
Re: Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
Tyson would've stopped Briggs inside 4 rounds I figure. Briggs trying to trade with Mike early would just get him beaten by the better fighter.

Excuse the double, por favor.
Re: Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
Did you see what I posted?
He was doing very well against Lewis, Lewis, who had beaten Tyson.
Re: Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
You forget Briggs nearly knocked out Lewis several times as well.

No he hurt Lewis on a couple occasions.
That's not the same as nearly knocking him out.
And it also separates the merely good fighters from the special fighters.
The special ones get the job done.
The goods ones are frequently reduced to saying "almost."

On a roll?
He's been fighting bus drivers, hospital cleaners, car crash dummies & dead people in recent times.
The last fighter he fought who could hit him back pummelled him.
Briggs isn't beating Tyson, although he was tough enough to stick around for a few rounds & would probably end up with the referee having to step in to save him in about 6 rounds.
Re: Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
He had him on the ropes with Lewis barely being able to defend himself.SenorPipino wrote: ↑10 Feb 2018, 12:48 No he hurt Lewis on a couple occasions.

Re: Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
I've seen the fight more than once. You're exaggerating Shannon's success greatly. Though he did win the first 2 rounds. If Lewis had been "Barely able to defend himself" he'd have been dropped or stopped.Jmangho wrote: ↑10 Feb 2018, 14:07He had him on the ropes with Lewis barely being able to defend himself.SenorPipino wrote: ↑10 Feb 2018, 12:48 No he hurt Lewis on a couple occasions.

He was stunned slightly. It happens. He recovered well, and proceeded to kick Shannon's ass.
Re: Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
He was literally RUNNING away from Briggs, he was on the ropes for those first 2 rounds.
Briggs gassed and then started getting his beat.

Re: Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
Lewis started the fight VERY aggressively as he usually did against big guys. Ruddck, Golota, Grant were all KTFOed early, Akinwande saved his ass in clinches, but two big guys weathered the storm and gave Lennox some tough moments - Briggs and Vitali. Klitschko gave Lewis much tougher fight, but Lewis was past his prime in that fight. When Lennox fought Briggs, he was in his prime, but I wouldn't call it a very tough fight for him. He was rocked in rounds 1 and 2, but dominated the rest of the fight. Lennox wasn't close to losing that fight, he controlled all Briggs moves and let Shannon land only one of 30 or so punches he threw after that left hook at the end of the first round.

Re: Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
I just rewatched the fight between Briggs and Lewis. I'd say Lewis was winning the first round easily until Briggs caught him off balance and sent him to the ropes. I think Lewis wasn't badly hurt by that left hook as he easily blocked all Briggs' punches until Shannon landed right hand to the back of the head and added left hook. Now, those two punches clearly hurt Lewis, but Briggs couldn't finish him off. In the second round Briggs landed another left hook that slightly stunned Lewis for a moment. He wasn't close to being knocked out.
Re: Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
Prime Briggs would be about as good as any of Prime Tyson's wins.
Tyson should really win this, but it'd be fun while it lasted.

Tucker at his best stops Briggs.
Tyrell Biggs and Tony Tubbs outpoint him.
Carl Williams would easily outpoint Briggs unless Briggs was able to reach The Truth's suspect chin.
And Bruno along with a motivated Buster Douglas roll over Briggs.
Briggs has had 25 effin' years to accomplish something special with his career
Since he hasn't I don't see why he would be viewed so highly by some.
Re: Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
You are incredibly underestimating Briggs, the guy had incredible power.
After seeing the arguments against Briggs, Mike Tyson would win, but he'd make Mike work for it.
Briggs was, and is, a great fighter, he's not some jobber and he's done some damn impressive things in his career.

Re: Prime Shannon Briggs vs Prime Mike Tyson
Then your standards are a bit too low.
No, Briggs is not a jobber, but overall his resume, especially when matched with the top guys, is not overwhelmingly impressive.
He has power, although describing it as "incredible" is a stretch.
Briggs is probably an underachiever. If he was more dedicated---concentrating strongly on conditioning rather than out of the ring showmanship---he might be in the discussion of the more accomplished heavies of the past 20 years.
But as it stands, Briggs is much more mouth than substance.
He's failed miserably when he's had the opportunities against the top fighters, save for that last minute KO of paper champ Liakovich and his undeserved decision over the ancient Foreman.
Briggs has had a nice career. Better than most fighters.
But it wasn't impressive by elite standards. He's always fallen short of The Big Time.
And now Brigg's is just an aging relic, opening his mouth, making empty challenges and trying to stay relevant in a sport that has passed him by.
