Murdered Boxers

Post by Taansend »

There's probably been a thread or two about this before but it's time to start a new one :TU:

Below is a link to a Wiki page of murdered boxers. I'm sure there were others - or even fighters who died too soon.

So here's two of them.

Julian Letterlough served 7 years in prison, got out & started a boxing career shortly before his 29th birthday.

He racked up 15 wins (all kayos) & 1 draw before challenging Julio Cesar Gonzalez for a regional title. It was an absolute war with Gonzalez down thrice & Letterlough twice.

Gonzalez won & went on to lose to Roy Jones, then pick up the WBO & IBF titles before fading away.

Both would be dead at the age of 35.

Letterlough from a bullet to the back of the head by a drug mob gangster (as he left a restaurant with his wife) while Gonzalez died seven years later in a car crash.

Anyway, for the anoraks among you, here's the WIki page of murdered boxers

:TU: cheered me right up that has thanks

On a serious note, that really is sad reading, I was gutted when Forest got murdered, he was a really good guy, I had no idea Bell had been killed either.

That Vernon Forrest murder case is bizarre . Guy gets robbed on gun point. Chases the the robber with hes own gun. They have fire fight and the robber escapes. In the end the robbers pal shoot Vernon in the back several times and kills him.

What the fornicate was he thinking? That hes some kind of real life action hero? IF he did the sensible thing and not chase the armed robber he would still be alive :witzend:

Who was the English doorman who was murdered a few years ago? Had an African sounding name

World heavy champ Trevor Berbick. With a machete - and recall BM shockingly ran a picture of him lying dead, not sure why.

Road rage accounts for a few of the murders. Eleoncio Mercedes was shot and killed in a traffic dispute (the WBC continued to rank him) as was Clemente Sanchez, who was murdered on Christmas Day.

This seems like an appropriate thread on which to raise the Liston question. Official cause of death was congestive heart failure. A significant number of people believe(d) something far more sinister.
I have read multiple articles on the subject and have never really been able to make up my mind as to what to believe.
Thoughts?

Arturo Gatti isn't listed, maybe because it was eventually classed as suicide but I know there was some question marks over his death.

I thought he was found with a needle in his arm and the story goes that it was made to look like a drug overdose but he was scared of needles or something like that

With Gatti, much like Edwin Valero, I am inclined to believe the official verdict of suicide despite well publicised theories to the contrary.
