Which coach can ‘fix’ Eubank Jr?

Post by SAPFO »

Where does Chris go now? With his fitness and dedication, he’s still got plenty of potential. But who in the world can get him to listen and work a game plan?

He has been brainwashed by his dad for almost 30 years and wont listen to anybody.

Look in his eyes - he is a robot.

Its not even as if they can go back to the gym and plan to have 3 good learning / building fights this year - because they are so difficult to deal with the negotiations will take so long.

Also, they are both so deluded that by now they will have convinced each other that Junior actually won the fight and Groves got the decision as some sort of illuminatti conspiracy against them.

Both Eubanks will want the next fight to be a world title fight - they will hope to replace Groves in the final.

Somebody as big and tall as Smith would just jab his head off all night long.

He's been there already and you can see the bits of Mayweatherisms he did learn at times but just doesn't do them correctly.

He has so much going for him, just needs to get into a proper camp far away from Sr & the other yes-man & do what he's told. Can't see it happening though.

Mayweather team definitely.. That or Snr full time all the posturing and bull shit needs to stop.. Wasn’t as far away last night as people make out.. Adjustments on his footwork and a bit of double jab with feints and head movement he could beat Groves... Groves is an elite fighter and it showed just how close Jnr is just needs to get proper game plans

Even with a willing pupil it would be very difficult to fix fundamental flaws in technique that have been ingrained for years.
if you take someone like CEJ who will not like being told what to do, it is going to be impossible.
I admire his self belief but the flipside that comes with that is always thinking you know best.

Well said. Plus I think people forget he's actually going to be 29 later this year, so not only issue of ingrained flaws, also the issue of finite time to address them. Given he relies disproportionately on his athleticism, the big issue is that we all already know that's going to be the first thing to decline (ask poor old Roy Jones Jr), so while being that age wouldn't be such as concern for a more technical boxer, it is a major one for Jr.

Almost any coach can help him, however it will be a question of wether or not last night shook him up enough to make such a big change to the way he trains. The trainer needs to be the boss.

Do you have any idea how long it takes to learn proper footwork? The countless hours amateurs spend doing footwork drills before they even learn punch technique. It's just not going to happen.

The biggest and easiest change is to coach him on his jab, to stop him squaring up, and learn a decent head guard.

It's such a shame with Eubank Jr. He's got a good chin, stamina and real self believe and a good heart. All the fundamentals of a good boxer are there.

Problem is there's been no improvement since he first started fighting on channel 5, 6-7 years ago. I can't believe how amateurish he still is after 25+ fights. Both his and his fathers ego has ruined what could have been a good fighter.

I'm surprised Ronnie Davies puts up with them. When during live press conferences they dismiss him as Eubank's trainer. And they simply say that Eubank Jr trains and coaches himself? I'm sure I saw a fight where Ronnie was trying to give Eubank Jr advice in the corner during a fight and they told him to shut up?

There's no way they are going to be able to bring in a real coach. Booth tried and had to quit.

His flaws are ingrained in him now. His bad habits have been there for years. A trainer will only be able to tweak things and make small adjustments. He could have Rob Mcracken in his corner it doesn't mean that Eubank would listen to him or even have the capabilities to do what was being asked of him. At times last night he looked lost

He's inherited one hell of an ego and he's 29, I think it's too late for him at the top level.

Totally. They were urging him to get closer last night, but he just didn't know how to do it. It was like expecting a penguin to fly. I think jr really believed that holding his own in sparring actually held some relevance. The gulf in class was painfully evident.

In my humble opinion the coach manager or trainer is only as good as the boxer so in essence there is no magic formula it’s quite simple really

I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say fella? Are you saying that Eubank Jr would be the same regardless of who trained him?

I hope he's just there to collect a paycheck. Eubank clearly hasn't been learning from him at all.
I'd be a horrible thought if he was still trying to teach him, when there's plenty of others that'd be far worth his effort.

Main problem is that Mayweather Jr reads a boxer, works them out and then executes a plan, in the ring if he has to. If Junior had half the boxing brain of Floyd, he would have adapted at least in some way to Groves. Just kept swinging bigger and bigger. Doesn't matter who is in your corner if you won't (or can't!) listen.

Yes mate wouldn’t make any difference at all too set in his ways and too much of an ego to listen to anybody imo

I wouldn’t be sure he and his team think he needs to change styles anyways.

As has been said - he is 28 years old , he is no young guy still learning. He has wasted the years when he could have had solid learning fights to have soft fights to look good on the highlight reel.

I think he stays at s-middle because it’s pretty short on talent there, and he could still pick up a belt; but if he stepped down to middle ... he wouldn’t get anywhere near winning a belt.

I think it’s clear why Eubank snr quickly made excuses to avoid GGG. And if he ever stepped in against Canelo ... ouch!!
