Shakur Stevenson or Gervonta Davis ?

Post by ValMar »

This is the question (mostly) for American boxing fans. Honestly, I have been watching no more then 4 fights of both youngsters, and that is not enough (for me) to have a valid attitude.
What do you expect from them ? Are they both the great prospects ? Can you imagine them (or one of them) as the genuine champion(s) ? What do you think about their optimal weight divisions ?
Thanks in advance.

Davis already got a title and lost it on the scales. He doesn't beat Berchelt or Lomachenko, though.

Not at all big on Stevenson. The guy has no power.

They're at two different places in their careers right now. Davis is in the mix with the top names at 130 or 135. Stevenson still has at least a year to go before he's even gonna be fighting contenders.

I see more potential in Gervonta Davis as far as ability in the ring, but as is the old cliche this sport is mental as much as physical and Stevenson may well have more mental fortitude and discipline than Davis to get the most out of his abilities.

Only time will tell.

This might be an interesting topic to revisit in 5 years.

Shakur doesn't have the power and they always get the referee to stop the fights early so that he can have TKO/KOs on his record.

Gervonta is ducking Loma so I don't care for him. Gervonta will be no higher than B level.

Stevenson only has 2 KO wins on his Pro record. You're saying the referees stop his fights early to get him quick stoppages?Yet he's won less than half of his fights by KO...how do you figure that one?

He's stopped only 2 guys as a Pro, and considering the level of opposition, I doubt the stoppages were uncalled for. It sounds like you're just trying to make something up to discredit him and you seem to think he's a Pro that's already been around for a while. Basically you sound like you have no idea what you're talking about is what I'm saying. Unless you want to clarify your referees stop his fights early to get him all 2 of his KO's comment.

I see. It was the two fights of his that I have watched. The stoppages were horrible. So it seemed that way to me.
My bad on generalizing.

Just watched the Mendoza stoppage. While he didn't exactly have the kid out cold he was teeing off on him and Mendoza was completely outclassed, and providing no competition whatsoever. Not sure what more you felt you needed to see there.

It's not like it was the 10 or 12 round and he had been taking batterings all 10 rounds long. He should have let the fight go on.

I had heard a commentator (Balkan sport channel Arena Sport TV) comparing Stevenson with young Mayweather. Too much ?

Doesn't need power. He can learn more later in his career. He's technical boxer. Power would do him good though.

Let them fight each other and we will see how serious these guys are. :box: :box: :box: Gervonta Davis is beast, too bad he is with Mayweather, because these dozens of a%%holes behind him have negative impact on his career, discipline and behavior IMO. I liked Shakur Stevenson in amateurs :box: :box: :box: . Anyway ...these "prospects" should fight each other more often. Tired of seeing prospect against bum every weekend

Agreed. The guy has speed and flash. Shak is no Mayweather (and never will be) but he could still be a top-notch boxer on speed & flash alone, based on the template that Floyd has provided. Floyd eventually added some snap to his punches over the long haul so your prediction is reasonable that Stevenson could eventually do the same.

Davis came in overweight on that last Mayweather undercard, when you combine that level of disrespect for the sport, his average performance, and that fluffy smurf outfit that he wears..........I got no respect for the kid. Maybe he’s the next broner
