Thurman has come out of whatever closet he's been hiding in for much of the past year and is now talking smack about fighting Errol Spence.

Thurman repeated that a showdown with Spence won't happen in 2018 but promised "It's gonna happen. Chill...chill..."

The two-belt champion has a voluntary defense scheduled for May 19 in Brooklyn but acknowledges that the world wants to see him and the undefeated Spence finally collide. It would be the biggest welterweight unification bout since Leonard-Hearns. Or at least Curry-McCrory.

"Right now the fight (with Spence) is not on the to-do list," Thurman says "But I know it's coming. If he's really 'The Truth' then he ain't going nowhere. I've got two titles so you know that I ain't going nowhere."

Thurman dismisses the fact that many pundits consider him the underdog in a showdown with Spence and warns the IBF champion that he's in a world of trouble when they finally meet.

"My name is coming out of everybody's mouth. I will handle you. I like that everyone in the world thinks that Errol Spence can beat me. That's cool, lose your money that night. That's not my fault."

But as Thurman continued his rant, he began to get a little testy.

"It will be my fault when I finally whoop his ass." Thurman continued. "I will handle him. I WILL handle him. This is MY division. My name is in everybody's mouth. Their names are not in my mouth."

So apparently we will eventually see who can whip whose ass, if Thurman keeps his word. But we just might not see it for a long time.

Thurman will stall as long as possible with hopes that Spence and Crawford will fight. That way maybe he can avoid losing to them both.

If he has a voluntary defence scheduled for May, why has he ruled out fighting Spence Jr 2018?

What's wrong with these modern 'champions' that seemingly only manage one fight a year (2 for the 'busy' PPV cash cows)?

That's why I have problems awarding someone a "fighter" of the year honor.

Fighters, especially champions, hardly ever fight anymore. It's one fight against a pushover and then one bigger bout late in the year. Nothing more.

I guess the top fighters are satisfied with the earnings that just 2 annual paydays brings in.

It's a tough sport and they are being paid more than back in the day. Fighters back then had to fight often to make decent money.
They have to manage their careers carefully. A loss usually diminishes a fighter's future earnings.

This is true. And unfortunate.

The fans lose out because the stars are seldom seen.

And the sport loses out for the same reason. Boxing can't thrive if its best fighters barely ever make an appearance.

Imagine if a healthy LeBron James or Tom Brady only played on a few occasions a season. Fans would abandon those sports in droves.

True but if we could get a company to sponsor a good sum of money for becoming undisputed and unified champ in a division it would be possible. Example, if the welterweight division was to be unified and get an undisputed champ whoever became the unified and undisputed champ will get 10 million dollars for unifying all the belts.

My quixotic dream is that a multi-billionaire would fall in love with boxing and provide that kind of sum every five years to get unified and undisputed champs in some divisions.

But wouldn't these sponsors be at war with the promoters who have legal control over the fighters?

On most occasions, individual promoters would oppose the concept of unifying titles since it would usually involve a champion from a competing promotional firm.

And as you know, promoters don't play well together.

And personally, while I would love to see the two best in each division square off, I recognize that a unified champ usually exists for a very short period.

It isn't long before a sanctioning body strips the champion of one of his alphabet belts.

These organizations are loath to share a champion with a competing group. It cuts into those juicy sanctioning fees.

True but if more fighters, once they realize their worth, behave like Mikey Garcia, promoters might not be a problem.
We would know the man in the division though. Like Wladimir was the man. We know he was the man, even if one of his belt was taken away but that's why I added my dream part because it would be done very five years.

And TV (and fans for that matter) need to stop fetishizing the undefeated record.

It's a damn shame when fighters lose out by fighting the best.

I don’t blame Thurman for wanting to have a couple fights off what was a pretty serious surgery before fighting the best fighter in the sport. Now if he doesn’t fight him by next summer then we can rightfully kill him. Guessing he fights some bum next and then a rematch with Porter or Garcia.

Thurman is a SMART business man. Making the Spence fight now is for little money. Let them both beat the others in the division over the next year or 2, even rematches, to prove they truly are the BEST 2 Welterweights in the World.

When the Money goes from 7-figures to 8-figures, then it's time to get it on.

For the FOOL that thinks Spence is the BEST in the World, WAKE UP and smell the beanie-Weenies, he isn't even the BEST in his division.

Welterweight Rankings:
Thurman
Spence
Pac-Man
Garcia
Porter Jr
Horn
Alexander

What do yal think?

Thurman is seen as the man in the division. Spence is trying to fight Thurman to be the man in the division. Thurman needs tune ups and then he faces Porter I believe. Garcia is free until he fights Thurman but he is not looking Spence's way. Pac aint serious about fighting any top fighter unless they are Top Rank fighters. Horn should be facing Crawford soon. So Spence is left without any real opponent to face.

Absolutely not. It is clear that both Spence and Crawford are better.

I believe Spence is better.

I withhold judgement until I see Crawford as a welterweight.

If he has any problems with the aggressive physicality of Horn, then I suspect the even stronger, more refined Thurman would have Crawford's number, at least at this time.

At the least, Thurman has proved himself in the welter division. Crawford hasn't. And until Crawford does, it's reaching to say that he's better than Thurman.

I think that Spence is better too but official Thurman is the man. He has the two belts that the others want.

Having 2 belts vs 1 doesn't automatically make you the man. When you beat the best in the division means more. Spence has work to do also, if the other top guys give him a chance.
Right now neither Porter or Garcia are mandatories for anyone, so Thurman doesn't have to fight them before Spence.

Except Pacquiao, who would you say has accomplished the most in the current welterweight division?

Thurman doesn't have to fight Porter or Garcia but they are all PBC fighters, Spence included, and that's how the PBC team has it planned out.

Well, let's see. Danny Garcia got one of the belts for fighting Guerrero, and Thurman got the other after beating Guerrero. Wow, now that is something. Since neither guy is interested in fighting Spence, we may not know for a year or two who is the best.
Crawford may end up the best, who knows. I do know that it won't be Garcia or Thurman. Neither guy could out-box Crawford, or go 12 rounds without getting the piss beat out of them by Spence. The real dream fight in a couple of years is Spence vs Crawford.

Thurman not having to fight Porter or Garcia has nothing to do with them being PBC fighters.

So, you agree that who has accomplished the most in the welterweight division currently is Thurman. He beat both Garcia and Porter. I not saying he is the best but currently he is the man with the crown and the two belts. in the division. That's why Garcia, Porter, and Spence wants to fight him.

The Ring has them ranked:
1.Thurman
2. Spence Jr
3. Porter
4. Brook
5. Garcia

ESPN has it:
1. Thurman
2. Spence Jr
3. Pacquiao
4. Garcia
5.Porter

That's not say Thurman beats Spence. Those list just show that Thurman is more accomplished(the man) until he gets knocked off his spot.

Thurman got his wish. Both porter and Garcia are mandatories now.

Imo they should fight and the winner gets Thurman.

If KT was brave, he should fight Spence in a unifcation bout, which trumps mandatories. He won't.

I would like that too. Porter vs Garcia face off to fight Thurman and that would have us one fight closer to Thurman-Spence.
