Duke McKenzie is a legend

Post by Ezzard »

Underrated boxing career. Articulate and intelligent behind the microphone. He comes across as a real gentleman. Kind of chap I'd like to engage in conversation and sip a brandy with after dinner.

Great ambassador for the sport.

Absolutely. He deserves his place in the hof. Naz said that last night. Always worth listening to only a matter of time!

I’ll always enjoy listening to McKenzie co-commentate on the Calzaghe-Lacy fight. Pretty much every time Calzaghe landed a hard shot, Duke would exclaim “Lacy’s gone! He’s got nothing left!” He must have said that about 80 times over a 12 round fight

More seriously, I remember McKenzie talking about his relationship with Mickey Duff on Bunce’s show after Mickey died; said some very nice words and showed so much class staying in contact even during the late stages of Alzheimer’s.

Based on what?

His record is pretty weak.

The standards for the HoF are pretty high though.

Has he done enough outside the ring to qualify for a Non-Participant or Observer spot?

Anyone know why Don Curry hasn't made it to the HOF?

Do you remember what he said after Joe fought Hopkins?

‘I cannot see any way Joe won that fight’. Haye was stood next to him and completely agreed. Both were baffled.

Peter Buckley always said that Duke was the best he fought. I know that’s a journeyman speaking but to rate him higher than e.g. Naz is some compliment.

Titles at Fly, Bantam and Super Bantam and a world title challenge at feather - other people on the list of three weight world champions include Ray Leonard, henry armstrong, James Toney and Miguel Angel Cotto.

However the list also includes Ricky Burns and Hozumi Hasegawa.

Unfortunately, good as Duke was, I think he is closer to the second set of names than the first, it would be a no from me I think.

I had some serious man-love for Tracy Harris Patterson, back in the day.

On-topic, I really loved Duke as a boxer but I cannot take to his commentary, despite the fact he comes across as a lovely bloke, as I'm sure he actually is in real life. When commentating he's just normally wrong about what's going on, IMO.

Still, as it's normally that or someone I instantly have to mute lest I kick a hole in the wall...

I have always ratee Duke as a commentator, as a fighter he won 3 world titles at 3 different weights, while he was no sugar Ray Leonard he was still in the same class as McGuigan

I'd say McGuigan had a significantly better record.
