WBSS - Top Class in every Way?
WBSS - Top Class in every Way?
I think that the WBSS has been put together better than any boxing promotion to date. The production is first class as is the format. Can anybody list downsides or are we all on the same line of thinking?

The production is top class, the ring, with the lights looks great, basically it's a better version of the super 6 with some of the problems ironed out.

Cruiserweight perfect. Only lebedev could have maybe, improved that lineup and that's debatable.
168 tournament needed a degale , Ramirez, or even zeague in place of yildrim and Cox. The format itself is sensational in every aspect, its just never going to be as good as the 200lbers again, to many interpromotional difficulties when you add the Americans and they're networks in.
Interesting to note that Paul Smith said all fight purses were negotiated beforehand..

Great stuff but...
Could the undercards be better ?. Especially the PPV's.
They may have been lucky so far with no pullouts or injuries. Hopefully, including groves in this.

It’s been brilliant. Such a pity that so much of it has been restricted behind a paywall / crappy ITV ad-hoc box office channel / the WBSS website.
Re: WBSS - Top Class in every Way?
they should do 175 next
sergey
badou-adnos wnner (or both)
bvol barrera wnner (or both)
browne
alvarez
gvoydy
beterbev
some weghts such as 147 the guys get too much money for fghtng nobodies for them to sgn up but theres several good 175 guys who would probably get much better pay than usual

It's been great and I hope they do more, be a travesty if Groves isn't in the final though.
Re: WBSS - Top Class in every Way?
Let's hope there is an option to postpone the final date until groves is fully fit. You'd imagine if braehmer upset Smith then this will be a huge possibility (as both with kalle)
Re: WBSS - Top Class in every Way?
The hick-ups with ITV's screenings of some fights have been the only negative I can think of. From a sporting point of view it's been brilliant.
Most of the fights have been good to watch. Wonder if that's purely because they're well matched or if the tournament format means there's an added element of fighters putting that bit more in to look good because they want to send a message. Probably just the former but either way I'm not complaining. I think only Smith-Skoglund, Braehmer-Brant and Briedis-Perez were anything less than very entertaining scraps.

Been great for the sport.
Featherweights next please.
Frampton
Quigg
Selby (ibf)
Warrington
Santa cruz (wba super)
Mares
Valdez (wbo)
Russell jnr (wbc)
The 4 champs as the seeds.
Only problem is that 3 of the champs meet 3 of the challengers this year.

I'd have liked them to hold the finals on the same show.

Add Rigo to that..
So I guess the Featherweights are secretly doing their own tournament.
Re: WBSS - Top Class in every Way?
I just hope it's been profitable enough for the people running it that they can do it again.
Re: WBSS - Top Class in every Way?
Not sure one should see that as a 'problem' in the bigger picture but I see what you are getting at.
I actually think they should do middleweight next and the first confirmed entry should be Junior

Re: WBSS - Top Class in every Way?
It's been a great watch. The Cruiserweight fights have been fantastic, the semi's were electric.
I can't see it making a profit overall. Has anyone info on the purse structure?
The problems they face with divisions such as 147 - US promoters and TV deals.
Because of the problem with US fighters, I think it will be mainly European/UK/Eastern fighters again.
I'd like to see a Light Heavyweight tournament(with Stevenson) and Lightweight next.
Kovalev
Stevenson
Jack
Beterbiev
Bivol
Browne
Alvarez
Winner of Super Middleweight WBSS
Failing a few names, add - Barrera, Joe Smith Jnr, Gvozdyk, Rodriguez, Fonfara, Buglioni, Yarde, even Bute - plenty of options.

Re: WBSS - Top Class in every Way?
The 168 was probably more profitable. With most Domestic fights.
The 200'ers.. They've been a great addition to be honest. But the audience just isn't there as they are mostly European boxers.. That's why Jeddah must be paying some good money to host the final. Definately recoup the money..
IF Tony 'the greatest cruiserweight in the world' Bellew had entered the tournament.. There would have been some interest in the UK for the cruiserweights, just because of him. But obviously Bellew is too good of a 200 pounder to be in the tournament.
Re: WBSS - Top Class in every Way?
That would be incredible.

The Russians will have paid a lot for the semis and would break the bank for the final if they could.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑20 Feb 2018, 12:57The 168 was probably more profitable. With most Domestic fights.

I understand why he took the route he did and had I been in his shoes I may well have done the same, he's got his family to think about. I respect him as a family man but I'm disappointed in him as a fighter for avoiding the best in his division.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑20 Feb 2018, 12:57IF Tony 'the greatest cruiserweight in the world' Bellew had entered the tournament..
