I'm not taking sides, but I do recall seeing some wagering websites where Smith was actually made the tourney favorite.

I thought it was somewhat crazy considering that his resume has nary a true quality opponent on it. But that's what the bookies say.

Smith might even be a bigger choice now. Since 7-1 underdog Braehmer pulled out and they replaced him with a virtual novice.

Smith is a whopping 50-1 favorite to pummel unbeaten Holzken on Saturday.

And with Groves very questionable to be ready for the June finals, Smith could easily live up to those surprising pre-tournament odds and win this thing in a walk.

Favourite at 168lbs is Liverpudlian Callum Smith who starts off at 13/8 (general).

Who is Callum Smith's best win? Nothing suggests he has the pedigree to win

A lot of boxing insiders appear to be "sold" on the physical dimensions of the Brit, his amateur pedigree, coupled with him passing their proverbial “eyeball” test.

He isn't the first fighter in the history sport that has had a great amount of praise lavished upon by genuine boxing people without them requiring the need for verification (such as having proved his talents inside the ring by defeating top-notch opposition).

For example: Gilberto Ramirez is perceived by many as the top dog of the 168lbs division, but his resume, fighting style and amateur pedigree doesn’t seem to warrant his possession of such a prestigious title.

Zurdo’s resume may be slightly better than Smith’s, by the smallest of margins, but his amateur pedigree and fighting style isn’t particularly impressive.

So which are these boxing insiders. Surely not t9o much trouble for you to name one, given that there are so many.

So what's a "boxing insider?"

Guys who participate in the sport, like the boxers themselves, along with trainers, managers, promoters, and maybe ringcard girls.

They all have opinions, just like us. I'm sure a few of them fancied Smith pre-tourney, and others liked Groves or Eubank.

So some "insiders" are right. Some are wrong. Just because someone works within the sport doesn't mean their picks are gold. So I wouldn't get bent out of shape about it one way or the other.

By definition then, Froch was an insider, and he opined that it would be "impossible" for Groves to beat Eubank.

So for an "insider" Froch didn't know crapola. Even if every "insider" picked Smith to win this thing originally, it really doesn't mean anything.

That may or may not be the case, but regardless, when the WBSS was initially announced, Callum Smith was installed as the favourite by both the bookmakers and also by boxing insiders.

Eubank was favourtie against Groves an look how that turned out.

Eubank Jr. was indeed the betting favourite amongst mainstream casuals, probably because of the legacy behind his father's surname, but the majority of boxing insiders actually favoured George Groves.

I previously posted a lengthy list of predictions those boxing pundits, ex-pros, trainers, promoters etc. who I class as "insiders".
