Lennox Lewis vs. Mike Tyson - Who were you rooting for?

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Re-visiting 2002.. I was just turning 10 when this fight took place. Remember watching it on Sky Box Office..

I think Boxrec forums started in 2003, so I couldn't find anything on here around that time.
------
I liked Tyson.. All my family did.. but there was something I liked about Lewis.. maybe it was his name Lennox 'the lion' Lewis.. i was the only one in my family that wanted Lewis to win..

I was secretly buzzing inside when Tyson dropped..
---

Who were you guys rooting for back then and why?

I was rooting for Lewis; though really I was rooting against Tyson. I was neutral regarding Lewis; I could take him or leave him. Could not stand Tyson because he such a horrible human being.

I was a fan of both as fighters but I had a particularly high regard for Lewis and wanted him to win every fight of his I saw.

Yeh. They were both closing their careers around this time. It was more of a must win for Lewis. Having Tyson's name on his resume was all he wanted.

I wasn't rooting for any of them in that fight because of the one simple reason - I thought Tyson had zero chances of beating Lewis. I thought Lewis would demolish him in 3 rounds and was surprised that Tyson lasted so long. From round 2 and until the stoppage it was one-sided brutal beating.

Personally, I was never a fan of either, so I had no rooting interest in that regard.

But on a financial level, I placed my American money on the Brit at a Mexican sports book. I believe that Lewis was a tasty 8-5 choice as a lot of wagers were placed on Tyson on fight night.

So where my money goes is who I root for. Lewis all the way.

I recall picking up a few extra dollars that night by making an even money side bet on Pacquiao, who appeared on the undercard.

Some guy who had never heard of Pacquiao (Manny was not a huge mainstream star back then) bet me $50 even up on opponent Jorge Julio.

He supported Julio simply because they were both from Colombia.

Pacquiao blew out Julio quickly.

Wagering lesson: Don't bet on someone simply because he's your countryman.

I rooted for Lennox Lewis. It was time for the great Mike Tyson to go. At the time, he was in a lot of bizarre endings in most of his fights after The Bite of the Century.

I think that fight was at least 6 years too late. This fight should have happened in the 90s decade.
