I think Benavidez should step back for a few fights and develop more. He looked fantastic against Gavril, but their first fight showed that he's still developing as a fighter.

Ramirez is arguably the best SMW at the moment.

agree on benavidez developing. getting some serious hype now but ppl need to keep perspective on his level of opposition. who the hell was ron gavril? a 32 year old who only needed to face elvin ayala to be found wanting.

kids only 21 and i feel could use a bit more seasoning before stepping to the big leagues.

I favor Benavidez by late stoppage. I think his power and hand speed advantages will make the difference down the stretch.

how good do you think gavril is? he just went the distance twice and scored the only knockdown. benavidez also only stopped douglin in the last round. at top level im not convinced by his power.robert easter was looking a major banger till he stepped up too.

ppl are rating this guy super big for really not much. is the talent already that great on the eye when just a fight ago he got dropped by gavril and lost like 4 rounds? gavril is a 32 year old who in his most notable fight aside from benavidez lost on every card to a gatekeeper

gavril is like a jamie cox level fighter although cox hasnt yet lost at that low a level

I think Benavidez keeps getting better and improving. Gavril seems pretty durable, if anything. Though might not be the most talented guy around. The knockdown to me was more Benavidez tank running on empty than he just couldn't hadle Gavril's power. Going by the outcome of the first and second fight, it's possible Benavidez did has the flu before the fight. Medina was a nice dominating performance and a god stoppage against a durable guy. The Douglin fight was 2 years ago, again, I think Benavidez has improved.

I don't think I'm over rating Benavidez more than I am not sold on Ramirez. I don't think he's stopped anyone good or durable. Findley is a tough journeyman and went the distance. Same for Gutierrez. Although he did stop Medina in 6, I didn't see the fight, so unsure how it looked. Aside him, as soon as he's stepped up, it's went the distance.

I'm not saying Ramirez is a terrible fighter. I'm just saying the same things you point out about Benavidez, you can say about him as well. I just think Bena...is more of a complete package as a fighter, especially on offense, and has more room to grow.

to me zurdo beaten a much higher level and looks well schooled and much better experienced. benavidez record is honestly barely past good prospect stage

even benavidezs break out fight was against a guy zurdo stopped faster when still a prospect. makes you wonder if the stoppages drying up might just happen to benavidez too, and of course we did see him winning decisions in his last 2 without even scoring a knockdown despite landing plenty, he was the one on his butt actually and ron gavril aint much

i keep seeing how benavidez will apparently beat up everyone already but the fights and results and opponents dont convince me at all. great for 21 and maybe he will long run but right now still improvement to do.

No disrespect, Mate, but there's maybe TEN fighters who are arguably the best SMW at the moment.

The best of all could be Uzcategui who's down at 22 according to Boxrec.

Its a wide open division with loads of decent contenders.,

Bar Groves vs. Eubank. When was the last time legit that 2 top SMW's fought each other?

Probably DeGale vs. Jack last year.. but that ended in a draw.. so no clear winner.. before that?

Ramirez - Abraham - 2016?
Jack - Groves? Not at the time..
DeGale - Bute?
DeGale - Dirrell?
Groves - Chudinov?

Non of them really apart from the DeGale - Jack fight at the time..

This was the division that needed all belt holders in the WBSS..

Yeah. Remember Erickson Lubin?
Charlo - Lubin is a reasonable comparison. In fact, Lubin was in my watch list along with Benavidez; but even watching Lubin as a top prospect, I had every belief that Charlo would kill him. At least Ramirez struggled with Jesse Hart and is not quite the killer that Charlo is.

@jamamb: Gavril was a fine top 20 opponent. Amazing win for someone of Benavidez's age. It is not as though Gavril was #100 or something. But it will take some time still before Benavidez has any business targeting top 5 opponents.

gavril was only in boxrecs top 20 because of his first fight with benavidez being officially a split. he was barely top 40 before that. as like a 30 year old he lost to elvin ayala and he hasnt beat anyone good.

its strange to give benavidez credit for beating a top 20 opponent when that guy was only in boxrecs top 20 because of bebavidez. so basically if benavidez had done a better job the first time and won a ud or tko then gavril wouldnt have made it to the top 20

fine opponent for a prospect but theres tons of ppl saying benavidez is the best or close to it now, and koing guys like zurdo, based on him beating a guy like gavril. theres such a massive f@cking jump btwn that and the top level

Benavidez definitely has a potential of beating Zurdo. I think now it is 50/50 fight, but in couple of years it would be a one way game.

Uzcategui is decent, but he doesn't have the depth or the wins. It's Ramirez.

Hard to find a guy with a better resume currently other than DeGale or Groves along with H2H skills. I don't think anyone currently beats Ramirez, not even Groves. There is only 1 fighter you can argue is the best SMW at the moment and it's Groves.
