Spence did not have long to savor the resounding victory. After spending most of his postfight news conference talking about his desire for a major fight and to unify titles against Thurman later in the year -- a nod to Thurman's desire for an April tuneup after being out of action for a year because of elbow surgery -- Spence was ordered on Monday to fight Ocampo next.

The International Boxing Federation sent Spence a letter, via promoter Tom Brown's TGB Promotions, ordering the bout. The letter pointed out that Spence's fight with Peterson was an exception to a mandatory defense that was approved with the condition that the winner of Saturday's fight must next face the leading available contender.

With the No. 1 and No. 2 positions in the IBF welterweight rankings vacant (because no elimination bout had taken place to fill either slot), No. 3 Ocampo is the leading available contender and, thus, Spence was ordered to fight him next.

The IBF ordered Brown and Ocampo promoter Zanfer Promotions to begin negotiations immediately. If the sides do not make a deal by Feb. 22, a purse bid will be ordered to determine promotional control of the bout.

In the event of a purse bid, Spence would be entitled to 85 percent of the winning bid, and Ocampo would get the remaining 15 percent, a smaller figure than had he fought an eliminator to become No. 1 or No. 2.

Ocampo (22-0, 13 KOs), of Mexico, has yet to face any top opponents, but many consider him an excellent prospect. His most notable victory came in November 2015 when he outpointed onetime prospect Jorge Paez Jr.

In this day and age when thanks to the internet everybody knows who’s a legitimate world title challenger and who’s just a run of the mill fighter only getting a title shot via political shenanigans why do world champions put up with the bullshit rules of the sanctioning bodies.

I’m not specifically referring to this fight as tbh i’ve never heard of ocampo but so many world title fights involve guys nowhere near world level - liam smith vs jimmy kelly is a particularly pitiful example -that the moniker “world champion” means fvck all anymore.

Why don’t top fighters and promoters just ignore all these alphabet organizations and just make fights without paying big sanctioning fees to to these fraudsters.

The IBF have a valid point. The others let the belt holders get away with all kinds of rubbish, if you are savvy and take the IBF route the champion has to face you. I actually like what the IBF do.

Never beaten anyone of any note and has never fought outside of Mexico. I haven't seen the guy box but on paper it should be a straight forward win for Spence. Some of the rankings from these governing bodies leave me fuckin befuddled!

funny that some ppl thumbs up the ibf in this thread. maybe. but to me they smell just as the other abcs. at best maybe a lttle less bad. see there top 15 fghters at 147. imo only peterson was legit top 10 and lower top 10 at that. compare there rates to boxrecs which to me are superior.

Spence (23-0, 20 KOs), represented by promoter Tom Brown, is entitled to 85 percent of the winning bid and Mexico’s Ocampo (22-0, 13 KOs), promoted by Zanfer Promotions, would 15 percent. That's just the IBF that have it quite low. Usually it's 75-25..

WBO have the split at 70-30 I think.

IBF were always good to Wlad. He requested the split be 85-15 vs. Thompson, they agreed..
He also requested he get 80-20 for Pulev. Again they agreed.
