Steward to Train Taylor

Manny Steward is being brought in as an extra set of eyes for Jermain Taylor, in his prep for Winky. Pat Burns and Ozell Nelson aren't stepping aside, more like making some more space for Steward.

seems to be a task Manny would like, as he's always arse licking Taylor on HBO telecasts, and he likes working w fighters who have had long amateur careers

should be interesting, I know Hopkins made Taylor look more awkward than Taylor actually is, but Steward is good at ironing out little faults. Especially with the great work he did with the once crude Lewis (even though his 'gun for the knockout' mentality was at odds with lewis' more cool/cautous approach)

I keep changing my mind on who's going to win this one. Taylor definitely has the better repertoire, Winky has the infuriating defense and superb jab.

Would be fantastic if the winner challenged Calzaghe, as American exposure is what Calzaghe wants and fighting a smaller man is a pretty decent advantage. I'd have to say that Taylor would be the better fight, as he works well with the right hand, which can trouble JC

Always seems a bit strange this. its kind of like the boxer saying that his trainers are not good enough. How many people do you need telling you what to do.

Well, maybe Steward can tighten up a few things, but I think his days as a trainer of note are far more in the past than his present.

one thing, if there's going to be three voices shouting in his face, that could be a big hindrance for fighting a difficult southpaw like Wright

Hmm, wonder if they are brining Manny in as a tactician, or as a trainer? Remember the absolute farce when Hamed was getting bitch slapped by Barrera, Suarez and Steward were shouting contrary instructions to Hamed, one of the most unprofessional bits of corner work I've ever seen.

Also, it makes me wonder who's decision it was , Taylor or his managment team.
Whoever it was its going to cost Taylor a bit of cash, if he's already paying his trainers 10%, is he gonna pay another 10% to Steward.

that's cause suarez was the one who was unprofessional in his lack of deference to a FAR MORE ACCOMPLISHED trainer than himself!!! actually, ANYONE is a far more accomplished trainer than suarez & it was a sign of hamed's lack of character that suarez remained & steward walked!!

that's beside the point!! i have been saying all along that taylor needs to get a world-class trainer to take him to the next level & altho manny may not be what he once was, he can bring SOME MUCH-NEEDED POLISH to jermain's raw talent!!

taylor is exactly the kind of fighter that manny would really get up for. size, speed, power, athleticism and amateur pedigree (not to mention a world title or two). with another very difficult foe it seems taylor could do with a fresh approach

i can't decide whether Taylor's going to outgun Winky or if Winky's going to befuddle him.

Steward should have walked then, why would he allow Hamed to dictate to him.....one word.....MONEY

Steward was lousy in the corner that night himself, his instructions were useless.

i never meant to imply that steward was any less greedy than anyone else in the game, but even an accomplished trainer like yourself must admit (along with the many kudos he is getting across the board from the boxing community) that manny steward has done a masterful job with wlad klitschko---not only in the byrd rematch, but for the timely tactics he had wlad employ against the heavy-hitting sam peter!! since the brewster disaster, he has basically helped WLAD TO RE-INVENT HIMSELF!!

i am by no means a steward booster, but i think he will provide SIGNIFICANT HELP to the young and relatively RAW jermain taylor!!

which was the point of this whole topic to begin with!!

I agree, following Wlad's very accomplished showing vs Byrd, you have to think that Manny can add something significant. Taylor has all the talent, size and athleticism.

However, I disagree on one thing - James McDonnell is Danny Williams' trainer as much as I am the great Carlos Maussa himself

I think that you've summed how the fight will go, early on I'm expecting Taylor to have the upper hand with his superior strength and punch, but Winky to take over in the last 3rd of the fight with his better fitness and once taylor starts slowing down.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is either a split decision or even a draw.

Yep, and take into account that Taylor tends to get rounds scored for him merely for throwing rather than landing punches, and you have a recipe for a controversial close points win for Taylor.

i reckon it will be another hard to score fight. winky's fights are often hard to score, as it can be hard to distinguish what is landing on the taret/what's being blocked. some ppl actually think soliman deserved to beat him (imo ww won clearly). i would think that taylor would get the benefit of the doubt, not that he can't win fairly

forgive me if i gave you undue respect for being somebody you arent!!

nonetheless, i stand by my take that steward proved he still has much to offer in the way of training by the masterful job he did with wlad vs peter & byrd!! i think he will definitely help taylor & could even provide JT with enuf of an edge to put him over the top in a close fight!!
