Re: How much of an edge did Wilder's cushioning chin beard give him?
Lots of silly posts here, none actually responding to the issue. Even that little chin beard of Wilder's would have to some extent cushioned a blow at that point, namely the point of his chin. If the US boxing commissions are suddenly, after about 250 years of organized boxing, allowing beards, they are not acting properly. But when have the boxing commissions in the USA ever acted properly? Boxing commissions are like the mafia bosses having a sitdown to decide whether anything illegal might be going on in La Cosa Nostra.

I'll look it up and examine it and announce my decision right after the commercial break!

And now, for the thousands in attendance and the millions watching over the world, ladies and gentlemen, here is the judge's decision:
120-96 unanimous by all one judges - The Enlightened One's post did not actually respond to the issue and it was silly.
Sorry, old boy. Better luck next time.

Well I think I'll definitely grow a beard in case I get into a fist fight, as it'll apparently turn me from glass jawed to taking punches from a 240Ibs Cuban. Thanks for the self defense tip.x2x wrote: ↑05 Mar 2018, 21:47 Lots of silly posts here, none actually responding to the issue. You're welcome. By the way, it's not specific to 240 pound Cubans. It also helps when fighting 220 pound Cubans and even 175 pound Cubans. Doesn't help when fighting midgets, though. They'll jab you in the groin area or throw hooks at your knees.BitPlayer wrote: ↑06 Mar 2018, 05:04Well I think I'll definitely grow a beard in case I get into a fist fight, as it'll apparently turn me from glass jawed to taking punches from a 240Ibs Cuban. OK, l'll be your coach. Grow a big mountain man beard, and let your hair grow very long too, and do a few pushups and situps and get rid of that beer belly and quit watching tv and drinking soda and eating junk food all night and do some interval sprints or long runs or something, and I'll make you the champ! The main thing though is the beard, except of course for paying me my coaching fee.

Yes it is. I just don't think beards should be allowed in boxing that's all. They never were in the whole history of boxing until very recently in the USA.

This is about the dumbest threads, by one of the dumbest posters, ever.

I don't know about this.
I just watched a 1970's porno with a chick with the most hair I have ever seen.
She took a pounding like I never seen before.
It has to be because of all that extra pubic hair.

For what it's worth if I were in a guys corner and my fighters opponent had a thick beard I'd bring it to the attention of the Athletic Commission, and try to insist that he shave it.
I assume that trainers or cornermen just don't think about these things anymore or maybe there was just a rule change regarding the issue I don't know.
Ultimately I don't think it matters most of the time, but I'd make a fuss about it mainly just because I'm a bit of a stickler for tradition...at least when it comes to the sports I love.

I think they just more or less make up the rules of boxing as they go along depending upon who is paying them, on and off the books, and seeing to it that they get future gigs, and also seeing to it that they don't "beat up by their rubber exercise device", like Nevada senator Harry Reid...

Sen. Harry Reid after getting beaten up, as he told the story, by his rubber exercise device, aka Fat Frankie and his crew.

Hey, this is a family friendly thread!
Re: How much of an edge did Wilder's cushioning chin beard give him?
No edge whatsoever. If Wilder has walked into the ring with a “cushion protector” around his chin I think Ortiz team may have had something to say about it.

Re: How much of an edge did Wilder's cushioning chin beard give him?
So now we're back to the beginning of the thread all over again again because some guy just swished in and read post #1.
OK, as always, to make things more easily understandable just extrapolate the situation to an extreme. Imagine a man with a giant mountain man beard, say it's a foot thick. Of course it will protect the bony structure of the jaw. You wouldn't even be able to get to his jaw. Smaller beards of course afford lesser protection. The degree of protection is relative to the size of the cushioning effect of the beard, but even a little chin beard will afford some protection to a punch that hits it at the appropriate angle..

how much of an edge do fat guys get with all that extra padding?
