Luis Nery is Banned For Life From Boxing in Japan

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Boxing Scene

The Japan Boxing Commission (JBC) announced on March 9th that it will suspend former WBC world bantamweight champion Luis Nery (23) of Mexico from boxing activities in the country.

Typically under the current regulation the JBC would suspend Nery for 1 year for not being able to make the weight. The JBC ethics committee held its meeting on the 8th and determined that due to the excessive weight of Nery, it will make the punishment a permanent suspension - thus banning Nery from boxing in Japan for life.

JBC stated "In boxing, a professional sport with weight limits are regulated, this action has caused severely impairing social credibility”. And “weighing over limit at a world title match, especially 2.3 Kg. over the limit is an extreme violation and requires an extreme punishment.”
------------------------------------------------------------
Nery stated after the fight “I am still undefeated, I can always win and take back the title again, I want to fight again in bantamweight and in Japan."

The WBC also announced the indefinite suspension for Nery on March 2nd and stated that it will not allow Nery to fight in a title match until he appears for a hearing.

In order to make the disposition effective, the JBC issued their decision to the other boxing sanctioning bodies and requested their support and cooperation to quickly incorporate regulation for fines and penalties for not making weight to prevent this type of incident in the future.

Is this more punishment for ending Yamanaka?

Seems petty.. Yamakana was probably on the decline anyway.

Well there are no bantamweight champions in Japan at the moment. Unless Inoue wins the Regular WBA title.

even the mexican loving wbc gave (cle)nery an indefinite suspension. i think the jbc just takes blowing weight that badly (after a previous ped failure) as a serious matter of honour, and that a big thing in japanese culture. japanese fighters regularly get beat by visitors and theres usually no fuss

actually japan also has some of the fairest judging to visitors in the world, if not the fairest

If Nery regained his stripped title and Japan could come up with a viable challenger, rest assured that the Japanese commission would welcome Nery back in a nanosecond to defend that belt.

I don't see this is as a case of sour grapes by the JBC. While both of Nery's wins over Yamanaka came by KO, they both have a bit of an asterix next to them. He tested positive for a banned substance following the 1st fight, and this time he weighed in well over the limit.

He's obviously not a fighter that can be counted on to do things properly, so I wouldn't welcome him back either.

Notably they gave Liborio Solis a 1 year ban (following bout with Kameda) and Marlon Tapales (second bout with Omori) a 1 year ban for almost identical issues (failing to make weight), it's a standard rule they have (Juan Hernandez also given the ban for failing to make weight Vs Higa and Ryan Lumacad, Vs Keita Kurihara).

I like an awful lot about Japanese boxing culture and the way they run the game, both administratively and in terms of the fighters, how quickly they bring the good ones on, how Darwinian they make it. Admirable sense in much of what they do, I think they have the best boxing model in the world.

What does "banned for life" mean anyway?

Nevada banned Tyson for life after he chomped on Holyfield's ear a couple times.

But to Nevada, a lifetime ban meant "come back to us in a year and we'll reinstate you."

Cash cow politics.

Do they possibly do things differently in the Land of the Rising Yen?

Banned or not. What are the chances Nery fights in Japan anyway?
