Mario Barrios made his hometown fans plenty proud Saturday night

The unbeaten super lightweight prospect continued his journey toward becoming a contender by making quick work of Eudy Bernardo on the Sergey Lipinets-Mikey Garcia undercard at Freeman Coliseum in Barrios’ native San Antonio. The 22-year-old Barrios scored a one-punch, second-round knockout of the Dominican Republic’s Bernardo to send his hometown fans into a frenzy.

Barrios improved to 21-0 and produced his 13th knockout. The 31-year-old Bernardo (23-3, 17 KOs) lost by knockout for just the second time in his career.

Following Barrios’ big win, lightweight prospect Brandon Figueroa stopped Giovanni Delgado in the seventh round of a scheduled eight-rounder.

The 21-year-old Figueroa (15-0, 10 KOs)of Weslaco, Texas, beat up the game Delgado throughout the completely one-sided bout, but it wasn’t stopped until the 1:55 mark of the seventh round. Mexico’s Delgado (16-7, 9 KOs) remained on his feet, but Figueroa was hammering him with power shots, much like he had done during previous rounds.

Figueroa, the younger brother of unbeaten welterweight/junior welterweight contender Omar Figueroa Jr., out-landed Delgado by more than 200 punches (267-64).

Richard Commey moved closer Saturday night to getting the second shot at Robert Easter Jr. that he desperately wants.

The hard-hitting lightweight contender from Ghana knocked out Mexico’s Alejandro Luna in the sixth round of their IBF lightweight elimination match in San Antonio.

Commey knocked down Luna twice in the sixth round, which prompted referee David Fields to stop their bout on the Sergey Lipinets-Mikey Garcia undercard at Freeman Coliseum.

The victory moved Commey closer to a rematch with Easter (21-0, 14 KOs), who conquered Commey (26-2, 23 KOs) by split decision to win the then-vacant IBF lightweight title 18 months ago in Reading, Pennsylvania. Mexico’s Luna lost for the first time in his seven-year pro career (22-1, 15 KOs).

Commey was ahead on all three scorecards at the time of the stoppage (49-46, 49-46, 48-47).

3 - 0 to relikh. He’s really doing a good job on the runner. I hope he can keep up the pace, he’s going to the body and not fully loading up on shots so it looks good for him so far. Good offensive display on such a negative fighter.

Not sure about rd 6...even? Although judges never do that. Thought the Cuban landed the harder shots in 7 but was deducted a point for a low blow so 9 - 9. Cuban is really starting to dig in and fire but Maybe its too late on the cards.
