Round-by-Round: Oscar Valdez vs. Scott Quigg - March 10, 2018

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Featherweight world titleholder Oscar Valdez is about to take a big step up in opposition.

Top Rank and Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, the promoters for Valdez and top contender Scott Quigg, respectively, are in the process of finalizing a contract for Valdez and Quigg to square off on March 10, two sources with direct knowledge of the negotiations told ESPN on Monday. They did not want to speak publicly because the deal, though agreed to, is not yet signed.

The fight would headline a Top Rank ESPN card at the StubHub Center in Carson, California, where Valdez has fought three times previously, including a tremendous battle with Miguel Marriaga, whom he outpointed to retain his belt on April 22.

Shortly after ESPN's story was initially published, Hearn acknowledged that the deal was close, writing on his Twitter account, "I see the news (is) breaking. Correct -- we are close to finalizing a deal for Scott Quigg to face Oscar Valdez for the world title. Hopefully (we will) get it over the line. Will be an unbelievable fight!"

Valdez (23-0, 19 KOs), 27, of Mexico, will be making his fourth title defense and stepping up to face his most notable opponent in former junior featherweight world titleholder Quigg (34-1-2, 25 KOs). Quigg, 29, though from England, wouldn't have to travel far from his training camp at Freddie Roach's Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.

Valdez-Quigg will go in a high-profile time slot, one ESPN wanted to use for a Top Rank card --- immediately following the ACC men's basketball tournament championship game at approximately 10:30 p.m. ET.

Valdez hasn't KO'd anyonce since winning the title.. I don't think he'll KO Quigg..

Valdez might meet the canvas here. Quigg has to be on his A-game!

StubHub Center, Carson, California - For NABO, NABA junior welterweight titles, Alex Saucedo (27-0, 17 KOs), who is trained by Abel Sanchez, knocked out Abner Lopez (25-9, 21 KOs) in the seventh round.

It was a real physical battle from the very first round and there was very little defense. Saucedo's face was pretty marked up by the second round as both of them were landing some very hard shots.

Other results

Andy Ruiz (30-1, 20 KOs) blasted out Devin Vargas (20-5) in a single round.

2012 Olympic silver medal winner Esquiva Falcao (20-0, 14 KOs) stopped Salim Larbi (20-9-2, 7 KOs) in the first round. Falcao dropped him twice, with the referee waving off the contest after Larbi went down for the second time.

United States Olympian Mikaela Mayer (4-0, 3 KOs) destroyed Maria Semertzoglou (7-4) in 35 seconds of the first round. Mayer stunned her with a hook and then battered her against the ropes until the referee jumped in.

In a super featherweight contest, prospect Bryan Lua (4-0, 1 KO) picked up his fist professional knockout win with a one-punch left hand that cracked Jesus Arevalo (2-3) on the chin and sent him down and out in the first round. Lua is trained by Robert Garcia.

Evenly matched fight. Have it 67-67 even after round 7.. Round 1 was a 10-10 as there was hardly any action.

Anyone else watching the ESPN card? I think Valdez vs. Quigg is next but in another half hour.. I'm going to be switching over to Garca vs. Lipinets.. I think Valdez vs. Quigg will start half way..

Hate it when two fights take place at the same time.

Quick recap

Vences started the fight by using a stiff jab to keep De Leon at bay. De Leon was applying a lot of pressure, but he was unable to get past the jab by Vences, who was controlling the distance.

De Leon was starting to inch closer and landing a good left in the fourth. Vences continued to use distance, box, and was making De Leon miss while countering back in the fifth.

During the seventh, De Leon was starting to have a little more success and cutting off the ring better on Vences. De Leon continued to rally in the eight, with several good head shots coming through. Vences went back to sticking that jab to the face of De Leon in the ninth. De Leon continued to rally with more hard shots.

Both boxers had their moments during the tenth round, with Vences doing the better boxing and De Leon landing the harder shots.

Quigg looked a bit shook from a few hooks that got through. Needs to tighten his defence here.

Valdez going straight back into it.. Quigg also being reckless landing a few of his own hooks.
