There are only five steps via common opponents to link a fighter who fought at the lowest professional weight in the sport and the heaviest heavyweight champion of all time.
Valuev - Ruiz - Jones - Hopkins - De La Hoya - Pacquiao.
I was asking the question about this while ago on the current scene section.
Here is the best answer I got.

I can't claim to be a history nerd but Georges Carpentier did fight a guy who weighed 103lbs in 1909 before moving through the weights 'til he fought for the world heavyweight title in 1921! On the other hand the heaviest opponent he ever fought was "only" 197lbs, so it might be argued that you need an extra step (Carpentier-Dempsey-Willard for example) to get from him to a really "modern-sized" heavyweight.
I just realized it was from lightest fighter to heaviest champion. Never mind then...
My question was about lowest weight class to highest.

Another way to do this. I think the above references to Pacquaio fighting at minimumweight aren't quite correct; he doesn't appear to have ever weighed less than 106 pounds in any fight. So we start with Rocky Palma, who came in at 104 a few times and fought for an international minimumweight title, and then move to Pacquaio who fought and beat Palma early in his career.
Jump straight from Pacquaio to Mosley, and Mosley to Winky Wright, who shares a common opponent with Guillermo Jones by the name of Edison Martinez. And Jones has fought as high as 239.
Parma
Pacquaio
Mosley
Wright
Martinez
Jones
Five steps between a former WBC International Minimumweight champion and a guy who has weighed in heavier than Anthony Joshua.

ok heres my effort, Jason Booth- Jamie Arthur- Karl Taylor- Dingaan Thobela, which is flyweight to sort of cruiser ! Thobelas last fight was for a regional lightheavyweight title but Thobela didn't make weight effectively making him a cruiserweight !
