Sergey Kovalev vs. Marcus Browne - OFF

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Sergey Kovalev will fight another southpaw in his next fight, this time an unbeaten American Olympian.

BS.com has learned that an agreement was reached Sunday for Kovalev to defend his WBO light heavyweight title against Marcus Browne. Their 12-round fight will be broadcast by HBO and will take place in The Theater at Madison Square Garden, the site of Kovalev’s last two fights.

The date for the Kovalev-Browne bout hasn’t been finalized. It could take place as early as June 23.

Whenever it happens, Browne (21-0, 16 KOs) has accepted by far the most challenging assignment of his five-year professional career. The Staten Island, New York, native has scored quick knockouts in back-to-back bouts, but those impressive victories came against fringe light heavyweight contender Sean Monaghan (29-1, 17 KOs) and Francy Ntetu (17-2, 4 KOs).

A little bit surprised about this announcement, even though I was the first to disclose to the forum about the potential for this bout. I even included him in the list of highly-likely candidates to be Sergey's next opponent.

Browne is with Al Haymon and his team were also in negotiations to challenge his stablemate, Artur Beterbiev, for his world title.

Perhaps Haymon is trying to gain control over the 175lbs division, because if Browne beats Kovalev, he'll be in control of three of the four main titles.

I guess I favour Kovalev to retain his WBO strap, but he is the sort of age that could potentially decline significantly overnight and be ready for the taking.

This is a great move for Browne. He could have beat Gvozdyk but he would have been in the log jam behind Jack and Alvarez.

I thought it would be Beterbiev as well, but he may be electing to remain inactive until his legal issues are resolved.

not taken by soviets at all

the top 5 are probably stevenson, jack, kovalev, bivol, and then your pick between alvarez, gvodyzk, or beterbiev. and of course andre 'daddy' ward was number 1 before retiring.

but browne will put his name near the top of the pile in june. i am very very confident hes winning this, probably by stoppage.

Winter's comming where I am Marv, I need some LHW nuts to hug (only to keep warm, you understand) who do you suggest if my beloved Krusher gets beat?
I still have a hand in Joe Jr's Y-fronts, but he's been out for a while..

The only reason Stevenson still has a belt is that he has been ducking for 4 years. Jack still has to prove that he deserves to be named among the elite LHWs. Ducking Bivol didn't help his case.

Hope so. Nothing against Kov, but his days are numbered. Last 2 opponents have proven nothing. If he beats Browne then you can say he's still got it, or he may 'expose' Browne.. But I think Browne has took this fight because he thinks he can win.

Browne looks like an easy KO victim - open to counters, one punch at a time. Once Kovalev starts to land, the fight will be over.

Browne hasn't had much of a showing as he's finished his last 3 opponents within 6 rounds. The last 2 only 2 rounds.

2 rounds is about how long he will last in his next fight. Meet Kovalev's straight right.

browne will win

if kov gets it, well then thats a good win and i give him credit. hard to talk about him being ruined if he pulls it off.

but dont think he wiill, think well see sir marcus by stoppage or at least get a knockdown for a clear ud. then ppl will talk like kov was never really good and be right onto bivols bandwagon fulltime

Really hope you're right but I dont think Kovalev is faded enough for Browne to take him. It's a HUGE step up for Marcus but I'll DEFINITELY be rooting for him!!

Straight right, follow up left. Kovalev would have to try to miss that chin on purpose.

Lol. Oh good. So in winning, Kovalev goes back to your not as impressive as Stevenson list. What an accomplishment.

hes already on that list. if he wins, maybe ill rate him ahead of stevenson. its not like i think stevenson is levels and levels above him. i consider them to be in the same general class of fighter. but i think stevenson had a bit more to him and wouldve won had they fought. but its not like im saying it was a lock.

When Kovalev wins, hopefully he can manage the reluctant Bivol treatment or even more if lucky.
