Fair assessment. Re: Charles Martin
For what it's worth, I called him the worst HW title holder of all time as soon as Glazkovs knee went. Both he and Glazkov getting a title shot was considered a joke at the time since Martin is obviously terrible and Glazkov struggle so bad with Malik Scott and Derrick Rossy. Martin has some pop in his punches and that's all. His technique is garbage, his balance is terrible, he picks his feet up when he throws punches, his chin is poor, his heart is questionable. The "prospects" he beat coming up had manufactured records and his "KO" over Dawejko is impressive until you remember Joey took the fight on a weeks notice and isn't known for being in shape on his best day. If anything, Martin is a good example of how far power can get you in the heavyweight division.candyslim wrote: ↑18 Mar 2018, 12:19I've said much the same but got sh1t from all sides for it, but I don't recall anyone dismissing him as a joke before Joshua destroyed him and I've said on here a few times I can see Wilder v Joshua playing out exactly the same way such is AJ's timing and ability to see an opening and capitalize on it.jamamb wrote: ↑17 Mar 2018, 19:59 honestly, call me crazy, but i think hes way better then he gets credit for
i know hes a joke like figure because of some of his words and actions, and how easily he went down vs aj, and also his title winning fight was funny, but hes not bad,. pretty good hand speed and power combo for a hw, and had really nice activity level coming up with some decent prospect wins, still being the only to ko dawejko.
i got the sense that he was gonna beat glazkov and hed really begun opening up in round 3 before the ending, but ya it wasnnt a conclusive win. i do think hes got some good ability but i wonder if theres much heart in it these days after thaat massive aj payday.
I would vm like to see him against Jennings or Ruiz or Kownacki etc.![]()

Considering Mike Weaver held a belt, that's a powerful statement.punchoutsb wrote: ↑18 Mar 2018, 22:26For what it's worth, I called him the worst HW title holder of all time as soon as Glazkovs knee went. Re: Charles Martin
Martin is probably the worst I’ve seen. He got a title shot without beating a single credible opponent then got paid a kings ransom to lose it
Re: Charles Martin
There has got to be someone worse considering the pre-Tyson/Post-Holmes era...so much to choose from. Granted Martin isn't good, but guys like Big John Tate; Mike Weaver; I'm sure one of those S. African guys, Coetzer and Knutzka (sp?). I'm smiling but saying he just can't be the worst! lol!

Weaver and Tate before my time. Michael Bentt maybe , but he only had WBO

Re: Charles Martin
Pierre Coetzer and Kallie Knoetze never held titles, you're thinking of Gerrie Coetzee who would have slaughtered Charles Martin. Weaver and Tate also hold an advantage over Martin; they've actually beat ranked contenders in the ring without needing a deus ex machina of having them blow a knee. For what it's worth they were also able to throw punches without closing their eyes, lifting their feet, etc.oogiebe wrote: ↑18 Mar 2018, 22:56There has got to be someone worse considering the pre-Tyson/Post-Holmes era...so much to choose from. I get confused with that round robin tournament and all the names involved. Thanks for clearing that up! Not world level, but I woudn't say Coetzer or Knoetze sucked. Not that Africa has a great boxing presence, but that was the golden era for African boxing.oogiebe wrote: ↑18 Mar 2018, 23:35I get confused with that round robin tournament and all the names involved. Deus ex machina indeed. He's the only one who ever got to be heavyweight champ without landing a single punch! Where is Glazkov? He never did come back.
Pierre Coetzer: His last three fights - Bowe, Bruno, Foreman. They all outweighed him from 24 to 42 pounds.
Bruno - Coetzer
Re: Charles Martin
I'm not interested in Martin... Martin isn't interested in Martin... He can't get himself together.
It's like Tyson Fury and Buster Douglas... They needed tough supervision. When they didn't feel like running they didn't run. They worked on their skills for a while.. For years actually - until they had enough money to eat like a pig for the rest of their lives... They never reached their potential and nobody really knows what their potential was.
A reporter asked Joshua before the Martin fight, "What if you lose?"
AJ said, "Let's not talk about losing -- because I never intend to lose a fight ever.. But you asked me the question respectfully so it deserves an answer.. Martin is undefeated like me.. When he loses he's going to have to go back to the drawing board... figure out what he did wrong... what he got hit with... how and why he got hit... and what he has to do to improve on his defense, footwork, punching, feinting, or anything that contributed to getting hit.
So I would do the same if I lost... You do that when you win, because you never fight a perfect fight and there's plenty for you to work on and improve on... Anybody can lose. The greatest champions have lost, so it's possible it could happen to me. I wouldn't mope around about it. I wouldn't listen to what the critics say. I'm not going to make excuses. It's a test of character and resolve isn't it? .... People will forget about the loss once I have another winning streak going."
Defeat is tough to deal with... If you go off the reservation because you lost like Martin did, few will respect you.

I don't want to think about someone's career more than they think about their own career. I made this mistake with Cooney, David Rodriquez, and others. I don't want to play the fool again. If Martin doesn't give a hoot, neither do I.
Re: Charles Martin
Martin might be between No. 15 and No. 20 HW, right now. I can imagine him going up to No. 8, if he is devoted.
I would like to see him facing Takam, Ruiz or Haye, it could be interesting........
Some posters, here, underestimate him, and think it is not fair, every active boxer could be destroyed by Joshua.

“I’m the champ, I’m gonna keep on being the champ. So I’m gonna knock him out, period. I don’t need to call no rounds, when I see it I’m going to do it. I’m going to get right over you, I’m going to step right over you. I walk this earth like a God, and that’s who I am.” said Charles Martin

EFe Ajagba is the new Charles martin.
cant see Charles taking on any serious fights soon altho a last chance saloon with Bryant Jennings would be good.

Re: Charles Martin
You guys really should watch that Martin vs Glazkov fight again.
In the first two rounds Martin fails to land any left hands. They all are wild and telegraphed. Glazkov would have outboxed him quite easily if that knee would not have blown up.
Am I the only one who first thinks of Charles Manson when I hear the name Charles Martin?![[icon_twisted.gif]](./images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif)

He was dismissed as a bit of a joke by most as soon as he won the title, once the AJ fight was made i recall the vast majority on the British forum predicted the outcome.candyslim wrote: ↑18 Mar 2018, 12:19I've said much the same but got sh1t from all sides for it, but I don't recall anyone dismissing him as a joke before Joshua destroyed him and I've said on here a few times I can see Wilder v Joshua playing out exactly the same way such is AJ's timing and ability to see an opening and capitalize on it.jamamb wrote: ↑17 Mar 2018, 19:59 honestly, call me crazy, but i think hes way better then he gets credit for

The AJ vs Wilder fight may well end up being a carbon copy, bit their is also the chance that Wilder may land first, their was absolutely no danger of that with Martin bs AJ.

He said it... It was on a YouTube video of him getting interviewed.
