Gary O'Sullivan Rules Out David Lemieux, Reveals Canelo Deal for September
http://www.worldboxingnews.net/2018/03/ ... -september
Canelo is set to fight Gennady Golovkin in their highly-anticipated rematch, and win or lose on May 5th, O'Sullivan stated the encounter is on and he's backing himself to KO the Mexican.
O'Sullivan had been touted for a fight on the Canelo v GGG undercard against David Lemieux, but he 33 year-old revealed that is not the case.
“I’m fighting May 5th in Vegas, I don’t even have an opponent announced, but I will have an opponent announced soon and I know it's not Lemieux and I know it's not Rosado, it’s neither of those," O'Sullivan exclusively told World Boxing News.
“I’m not sure who I’ll be fighting at the moment but Golden Boy are putting somebody in place and I’m going to fight them on the 5th May in Vegas,” he added.
If O’Sullivan is successful in the spring, his superfight with stablemate Canelo awaits in September, according to the Irishman.
Despite the deal already been agreed, O’Sullivan has his fingers crossed Canelo comes out on top against Golovkin, in order for the world titles to be a stake.
“The fight i’m looking at is Canelo after May 5th so I hope that Canelo obviously beats Golovkin. I’m going to fight him regardless but it’s much better for me if he wins.”

Not sure how it works in America tbh mate but it wouldn't surprise me. I can't see Canelo facing GO'S if he wins though. Seems a strange move.

He'll get minimum $1m.. no less.
Re: Gary O'Sullivan Rules Out David Lemieux, Reveals Canelo Deal for September
wouldnt be surprsed if theyve just told gos he could fght canelo and hes assumed thats a deal made. just seems a totally bizaare fight and utterly massve drop down for canelo. when was the last time canelo fought a low profile fringe contender with so little to offer in terms of name/belt/or reputaton?
Re: Gary O'Sullivan Rules Out David Lemieux, Reveals Canelo Deal for September
This would be reasonable comeback for Canelo if he loses the rematch, but will be nigh on impossible to sell if he beats GGG.
Particularly with BJS waiting for the winner.

This is an odd match to make even if Canelo was coming of a loss.

Relevance is everything. O'Sullivan pulled off an upset on HBO in exciting fashion, and besides the "Irish vs Hispanic" rivalry always works. It'd be a stay busy fight, sure, but the Irishman deserves at least one big payday before calling it quits.
Re: Gary O'Sullivan Rules Out David Lemieux, Reveals Canelo Deal for September
scoring a win over a middling already found out prospect on an hbo undercard doesnt really make spike all that relevant. hes not got any name at high level, he has no title or mandatory status, etc. at best to me he seemed a good lem comeback opponent
would be a very strange strange one vs a ppv star like canelo and id question whether its really as likely as he makes it sound

and wtf is irish vs hispanic angle
mexicans give a shit about an unknown irish guy? and how many irish in the us know a fringe contender who has only 1 fight on a notable us network

I don’t think we have any aggro with the Mexicans, do we?
If Spike can get this fight and get a near 7 figure purse, he’s overachieved big time but fair play if he pulls it off. He’s a good guy.

ive know of the mexican vs puerto rico rivalry but ive never heard of this irish vs hispanic mass selling angle, and who the f@ck mainly watches canelo fights anyway? id guess mostly mexicans and mexican americans and blacks. i dont think much sh!t would be given about irishness. spike isnt even much of a name domestically.

That’s a considerable amount of people who watch Canelo so...jamamb wrote: ↑19 Mar 2018, 18:26 ive never heard of this irish vs hispanic mass selling angle, and who the f@ck mainly watches canelo fights anyway? id guess mostly mexicans and mexican americans and blacks. i dont think much sh!t would be given about irishness. spike isnt even much of a name domestically.

oh i know theres a lot who watch, but i wouldnt think it would be demographically skewed to an irish guy
