Re: destructive domestic runs
John Murray seemed to be chopping up British lightweights for fun for a few years
Re: destructive domestic runs
David Price!
Re: destructive domestic runs
so far 3 good picks who never made it world level, i guess a guy like ritson still has plenty to prove as he goes up the levels

Re: destructive domestic runs
Didn't they give someone maybe Junior Witter the Lonsdale belt after 2 defences as the the competition was so inferior? Or did I just make that up?
Re: destructive domestic runs
Lee Selby ko'd Smith and Simpson in British title fights also rendall Munroe a few fights later for brit and Euro title
Re: destructive domestic runs
Ritson looks fantastic it will be a great ride watching him. So humble too just so heavy handed I hope he goes all the way.

He only made one defence, but I seem to remember hearing he was given the belt for keeps for the reason you said. Same happened with Charlie Magri.ShadrachSimmo wrote: ↑25 Mar 2018, 06:22 Didn't they give someone maybe Junior Witter the Lonsdale belt after 2 defences as the the competition was so inferior? Re: destructive domestic runs
I'd be surprised if he did. Looks like the type of British fighter who will struggle at Euro level and beyond due to the lack of head movement etc. Would love to be proven wrong, but just seems too upright and dimensional for world level.
Re: destructive domestic runs
I have never seen him box - is he a John Murray type?
Or possibly a Michael Katsidis?
Re: destructive domestic runs
I've only watched his last two, but John Murray strikes me as a reasonable comparison (though ironically of course it was Cardle who came from the same stable as Murray).bripez wrote: ↑25 Mar 2018, 13:40

He's nice and compact, but seems to rely on just tucking up and taking shots on the gloves, rather than actually relying on head movement and better footwork - it's just my opinion, but I see that as a very common trait among those Brits who can get to Euro level but then get unstuck when they try and make world class... just too one-dimensional a style.

Very little head or upper body movement and got caught a hell of a lot last night. I like him and hope he does well, I expect a similar career to maybe a John Murray or even a Jamie Moore, in some good wars but short at the top table.Deserter wrote: ↑25 Mar 2018, 13:56I've only watched his last two, but John Murray strikes me as a reasonable comparison (though ironically of course it was Cardle who came from the same stable as Murray).

Pat Barrett.
Re: destructive domestic runs
Neville Meade was all washed up as a domestic heavyweight when he suddenly smashed his way to the British title in the early 1980s with brutally quick wins over Dave Pearce, Terry Mintus, Stan McDermott (much better than John), Winston Allen and Gordon Ferris.
Re: destructive domestic runs
Now that you mention it, there are plenty of similarities between Ritson and Price. Both big tall upright fighters who operate behind a high guard.
Their respective early careers couldn't have been much different though and Ritson took some big shots last night without wilting, so here's hoping he can go a bit further than Price.
If not, at least it will be entertaining while it lasts.
Re: destructive domestic runs
I always liked Gary Sykes on the domestic scene.
Beat Crolla twice, Coyle, Morris, Lawton, Johanson, Hooper, Kayes and came up short vs Walsh, Buckland, Flanagan and Campbell. Some list of domestic names he took on.

Re: destructive domestic runs
Their records suggest Big John was MUCH better than his dad. One loss avenged, two (one controversial) losses to the future lineal champ and two splits against a still very good Danny Williams... Only stopped 4 times in twice as many bouts to his dad's 6. In better class, too. And no, I haven't watched his dad.

Re: destructive domestic runs
Price looked a killer at domestic level sparking out decent hands like Sexton, Big John, Skelton etc with no problem.
