To be British champion so early in Lewis's career seems to show excellent potential for eventually progressing beyond the British scene to European and ,maybe world level. Winning the Lonsdale belt outright at lightweight does appear to be quite achievable though and would be an outstanding achievement if Lewis can make the weight for another two defences. He is a pretty big bloke for a lightweight however. I obviously do not know what his career ambitions are but a move up to light welterweight and maybe even another British title at this weight would certainly seem possible. Do BBBofC rules allow two Lonsdale bels (at two different weights) to be won outright? Anyway Lewis does appear to be be a pretty bright star in the British boxing firmament at the moment and I will be following his fortunes with great interest. Do other members of the forum have any views?

Looks a very exciting fighter. Barrett and Murray are no world beaters but he impressed against both so we haven't seen what level he could get to. It's nice to get excited over a fighter but I think it's far to early to think of world honours when his 2 best wins are not even European level. He's a long way behind Campbell and Crolla domestically but take them out equation then I'd say he is the best of the rest. I'd like to see him in with Dodd or Cardle next and I think he would beat both quite comfortably

How far do people think Ritson can go. If Cardle could punch I think he would of been in trouble last night. He regrouped well to get the stoppage in the next round but showed that he is still a way off the likes of Campbell and Crolla. Exciting fighter though and one I think could go all the way if he is given time.

His guard and balance got him through the first. If he adds head movement then he'll probably be onto a winner as offensively he's going through British level guys with ease.

He’s huge for a lightweight, strong and obviously hits hard. But he looks pretty basic to me: just a waltzes upto opponents with his hands up with not much thought. If Cardle could punch he would have been in a lot of trouble.

I think he’ll be quite some way short of genuine world class but it will be a fun ride. Good luck to him seems a throughly down to earth chap too.

I agree with everything you said mate except I believe he could actually be a world level fighter given time. If he Carrys on progressing and working on his defence in 18 months to 2 years he will be some fighter. In saying that I don't know how much longer he can make lightweight and he might not be the same fighter going up in weight

That's the thing, Cardle isn't a big puncher so Ritson may have reacted differently if he was. As it was, he did what needed to be done, stayed calm under fire and put his opponent away, excellent performance.

If Ritson goes up in weight how likely is it that we will see him in with Kelly down the line?

Newcastle vs Sunderland angle should make it easy to promote.

Kelly looks a big lad for 147. Probably never cross paths I wouldn't have thought.

You might be right, also I can't see Hearn throwing his only two notable north east fighters in with eachother, at least not until he has built a sizeable boxing following up there.

It was just a thought.

It'll be good for the North East boxing scene having them two headlining some shows out that way. Love Geordieland for a night out so would consider going down for a show :TU:

This. If he can a bit of finesse then he's the sort of guy who can really go places as he seems to have very decent power.

Last nights fight here. I love the looping left to the body & whipping right hook to the head.

Hopefully he can still make the weight ok in future.

The turnaround in KO ratio is fantastic. 1 knockout in his first 6 fights then 9 in his next 10 - as he steps up opposition.

Very reckless though is Ritson. I would like to see a fight with Crolla next if they could make it. Burns would probably be a perfect test due to his durability and feather fists. I think a fight with Luke Campbell would be very interesting also. We still don't know how good Ritson is. He fights like he has absolutely no concerns about taking a clean shot to the chin. Keep him away from power punchers at the moment I'd say. When he gets up to world level he will find himself against bigger punchers so the margins will be much slimmer. It's a weird one because you don't want him to get beaten at a lower level. Say Luke Campbell lands one and chins him. Where does he go? Better to get starched by Mikey Garcia for a few quid. Much more dangerous though, Ritson could get absolutely mullered in there if he comes in going to war with Garcia

Agree he looked reckless AFTER the first knockdown. Maybe then he felt that Hula couldn't hurt him so just went all out. Has to be hearts in mouth if you're on his team.

I think Burns would be an ideal fight for him. If he passes that then maybe Crolla or Campbell if Campbell loses again to Mendy.

I'd have Burns as a favourite in that fight (didn't see him last night though). I think he'd wear down Ritson late on although I'd be happy to be wrong. Nothing against Burns, just a passing of the torch deal.

Would love to see him push on for European now if he doesn't fight Coyle.

I also think Yvan Mendy would be a great test for Ritson down the line. Maybe if he picks up the European Mendy could be one of his defences.

You can see Ritson is improving every fight and because he's blitzing British level opposition, there must a temptation to step him up to fringe world quite quickly. But he's only 24 , still improving and I think gradual is the way to go with Ritson.

The new Paul ‘Scrap Iron’ Ryan. Ritson’s style is not conducive with him making it to world class. In fact, he’s more likely to suffer a devastating KO defeat which his career may not recover from.

Exciting, yes. A great, humble lad, yes. In form, yes. But an accident waiting to happen which has been highlighted against non-bangers.

I hope Hearn looks after him properly with longevity in mind, instead of milking the cash cow.

Hard to disagree with that. It will be a fun ride while it lasts though, that’s for sure. I’d say Ritson has a better chin than old Scrap iron but I suppose he’s yet to face anyone with a dig.

Ritson has great potential.......because he can punch like hell, is huge for a lightweight, and has an outstanding temperament. He's also a very likeable lad who will appeal to the masses if he keeps doing the business.

But he is still raw and even though he's walked through British level, there have been some moments where flaws have been exposed. He is a bit gung ho and reckless and he'll need to address that as he moves up the levels. But he's young and with the sort of attitude he's displayed so far then there is no reason why the flaws cannot be ironed out.

He's more than just a big, strong banger. His movement is good and he's actually fairly slick as he showed against Barrett. But his last few fights have been over so quickly he's not shown that.

He needs a good learning fight now and to get a few rounds in. Not necessarily someone whose a big threat to really challenge him, but someone who can he work on things against and who'll require a bit of breaking down.

There is a definite option to put him in with Coyle next....and I do think he'd trample all over Tommy if push came to shove. But the holes in Ritson's defense at the moment would definitely give Coyle a slim but genuine chance at uncorking something big. But give Ritson another fight or two to smooth out the flaws and I'd give Coyle no chance.

If they can't get the right kind of fights to learn from, then maybe a trip the states for some good quality sparring would be very useful.
