The Heavyweight Career of Archie Moore

Archie Moore fought successfully as a heavyweight, but he was unfortunately lost all 3 fights with future World Heavyweight Champion Ezzard Charles before Moore won the World Light Heavyweight Championship and Charles could have won the World Light Heavyweight Championship himself. Moore knocked down Rocky Marciano in the second round in his first attempt to win the World Heavyweight Championship, but Rocky ended his career by knocking Moore out in the ninth round. Moore was knocked out by Floyd Patterson in 5 for the vacant World Heavyweight Championship and Moore was stopped by then Cassius Clay after knocking Moore down 3 times in 4 rounds.

Despite the fact that Moore was unable to beat the 4 World Heavyweight Champions, he successfully defeated heavyweight contenders who were each in line to challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship. Moore fought brilliantly at heavyweight during and after his reign as World Light Heavyweight Champion.

I remember reading various Tales of the Tapes years ago,
and Moore's and Walcotts were almost identical (including 18 " biceps).
The one difference was that Walcott was listed as an inch taller.( at 6')

Sonny Liston and George Foreman didn't even have 18" biceps.... Wladimir Kltischko did and Anthony Joshua actually exceeds the measurement by only an inch...

Well, I did think that Toney Frazier would be a good competitive bout.....and I woudn't rule Toney out......., and at that time I was considered fringe lunatic for my beliefs.

Kalan has helped me enter the "middle ground" group of thinkers.


However it was a very lopsided poll, and I think it was nearly 100% KO for Frazier based on the Current Wisdom at the time.

okay you were right Tale of the Tape said Archie Moore had only 16.5 inch biceps.
( although i'm sure I saw it listed as 18" biceps somewhere,but that may have been a newspaper misprint typo
when I think about it.

Archie Moore sparring with Jesse Gorilla Brown in preparation for his bout with Rocky Marciano. Brown had a similar style to Marciano, but his 10-8-1 (5) record overall as a pro shows that he was certainly a better amateur.

In the article below it's interesting how the newspaper men asked Moore WHO he had ever fought similar to Marciano and he said, "Shorty Hogue", a man he lost to twice and beat once.

okay you were right Tale of the Tape said Archie Moore had only 16.5 inch biceps.
( although i'm sure I saw it listed as 18" biceps somewhere,but that may have been a newspaper misprint typo

Yeah... I know 18 inchers when I see them... Not too many leaned out Heavyweights have them though they're easy for a body builder to acquire... If you get them from push-ups, pull-ups, rope climbing, high bar routines and dumbbell and kettlebell routines, the big arms will allow you to punch faster and harder with less effort..

Barbell curls, bench presses, and sets on top of sets will break down the muscles and make them grow, but they won't necessarily be that functional for Boxing.

actually The Salt Mine was near Ramona which is about 40 miles from San Diego.
It was located at the base of Mount Woodson and still was wilderness area in the 1950's.
It had miles and miles of trails.

The Salt Mine was located on 120 acres.
I think Archie Moore had purchased it around the time of his fight with Floyd Patterson.
I'm not sure if he had ever trained there earlier before he bought it but he may have because he had lived in San Diego
for years.( since 1938)

Yeah,he had various sized boulders around the Salt Mine that he named after other Boxers and their names painted on them.
Muhammad Ali used the same idea for his training camp at Deer Lake in Pennsylvania during the 1970's.

I remember reading in his 1960 autiobiography where he said
that he was in acuality(in 1960) a heavyweight
and that he had 19 inch biceps ,12 inch forearms and a 48 inch chest.
He also wrote that he could do 255 chin-ups
( but didnt say if he could do them consecuvivley or repitions of numbers in a certain amount of time to get to that amount.
