Hearn: Whyte Was 'Poor' Against Helenius, Fight Was a Stinker

Eddie Hearn wasn’t particularly pleased with what he saw from Dillian Whyte in his last fight.

Helenius wobbled Whyte with a right hand in the second round. Whyte was able to recover, however, and took complete control of their unremarkable bout soon thereafter.

“With Helenius coming in on a couple weeks’ notice, Dillian Whyte didn’t get maybe the best preparation,” Hearn told BS.com recently. “He was a bit cumbersome in that performance. I think Helenius chose to box off the back foot, and after he got hurt in the fight [in the fifth round] didn’t really wanna get involved too much. And I thought it was a bit of a stinker, to honest with you."

“But I think Browne-Whyte won’t be. Dillian is not exactly the guy who’s renowned for being in stinky fights. I mean, the [Dereck] Chisora fight, the AJ fight. He’s always in good fights. It just so happens that against that guy, who was 6-foot-8 and boxing off the back foot and holding and being awkward, he didn't look that great.”

I'm glad to see the poll is now reflecting what I see this fight as.
Initially it was a huge swing in favour of Whyte, now it is around the 60/40 mark.
I think that's about right.

Both have come in heavier than I expected.

I thought Whyte points but think he might be under pressure to look good so he might try to go for a stoppage which could mean Browne lands a big one on him.

I'm guessing it's the latter but because its so commonly mispronounced then he probably just lets it slide rather than correct people every time. That could be wrong though.

The New Age Boxing podcast are claiming Lucas Browne was knocked out cold during his final sparring session prior to fighting Dillian Whyte.

This story about Browne being knocked out in his final sparring session is concerning, if this was the case, why were the board not notified and why was the fight allowed to go ahead?

Have just got round to watching the fight. Cant believe how bad he looked, he just left his head there to be punched. He didnt look good enough for British level let alone World.

He must have walked into that fight feeling low on confidence as Chisora (and Fury) must have bossed sparring if he boxed anything like that.

Ive never followed his career, was he better than that before the layoff?

His performance against Chagaev was much better than his effort on Saturday night. In that fight he weighed in a career low 250lbs and looked to have better movement, he was losing most of the rounds and was knocked down in the 6th but you just got the feeling he was much more competitive in that fight than on Saturday night v Whyte.

I had not heard the sparring stories before Saturday night but when he weighed in at 264lbs it gave me the impression that his preparation for this fight had not gone that well.

An excellent question, assuming it is true.

Deontay Wilder it wasn't. Just who it was isn't being disclosed at present, but it is known Chisora was on Browne's sparring rotation.

I feel like this question is not being given the attention it deserves on here, surely it should have its own thread?

I guess it depends on how much credence you give something that, at this stage has only been heard on a boxing podcast? If the story is true there really ought be more leaks before long, and if there aren't, well...

The point made on the podcast referred to earlier in this thread (New Age Boxing) was that the way Browne was out cold when he hit the floor in the fight with Whyte gave credence to the rumour that he had been knocked out in sparring 10 days before.

The medical checks done before the fight by the board surely would have involved some sort of question about whether or not he had been knocked out in sparring recently?
