Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
Joseph Parker is the most popular ever opponent for Anthony Joshua with British bookmaker Ladbrokes.
British punters are throwing their money behind Parker causing an upset in their world heavyweight boxing unification showdown in Cardiff.
According to Ladbrokes, no other opponent throughout Joshua's unbeaten 20 fight professional career has ever been as popular as Parker.
Ladbrokes would stand to lose record amounts on the Joshua fight should Parker win.
"Joshua is the hot favourite but the popularity charts tell a completely different story, and we could end up paying out a fortune if Parker causes an upset," a Ladbrokes spokesman said.

Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
not sure why tbh if you actually watch parkers fights. theres no serious punchers chance and hes not one to be outboxing anyone at a high level either.
i think aj has already beaten multiple fighters better then him
parker easily couldve lost the fury and ruiz fights and he showed 0 power. hes gonna stop a guy who wasnt stopped by wlad (one of the best punches of the last 2 decades) or whyte?

Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
Noticed this morning he came in from about 6/1 11/2 down to 9/2 4/1 when I first saw the move I thought maybe something had been said or happened to Joshua.
Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
maybe the hypes working? if this fight was genuninely promoted based on what the fighters actually bring, a very poor marketing job wouldve been done.
aj is one of the best since lewis already, joe parker is another liakhovich (or abouts)

Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
It’ll be all the casuals who tune into Joshua’s fights, taken in by the hyped up promos portraying it as a 50/50 fight, and Parker’s shiny unbeaten record & the fact he’s also a “world champion” - and all those rugby types who see him as a fearsome all blacks Maori warrior who’s gonna wreak havoc. Etc
Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
The bet may be a hedge, say, Bet Parker Decision and Bet Joshua KO. Worse case is a small amount given the odds on each. Just saying...Like a Boss wrote: ↑28 Mar 2018, 18:59 Joseph Parker is the most popular ever opponent for Anthony Joshua with British bookmaker Ladbrokes.

Though I suspect at least a portion would amount to hedging bets.
Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
There's more betting on Parker than ANY OTHER OPPONANT of Joshua. So the hedging would be the thing. I'm sure the odds on a DEC win for Parker are enormous. Maybe too big not to take a flier, with the hedge being AJ by KO.Like a Boss wrote: ↑28 Mar 2018, 20:05That's one hell of a lot of hedging!oogiebe wrote: ↑28 Mar 2018, 19:53The bet may be a hedge, say, Bet Parker Decision and Bet Joshua KO. He might be worth a punt if he was 12/1 or over but 6,5,4 is a complete waste of money IMO, he's shown recently that he hasn't got killer power at the topish level never mind against the best, also he'll never get the nod against AJ on points even if he was to deserve it.

I didn't know the odds. I assumed they were long, but you know what happens when you ASSuME...Nightmare Roy wrote: ↑28 Mar 2018, 20:38 He might be worth a punt if he was 12/1 or over but 6,5,4 is a complete waste of money IMO, he's shown recently that he hasn't got killer power at the topish level never mind against the best, also he'll never get the nod against AJ on points even if he was to deserve it.

Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
There's a good reason why the odds for Parker by DEC would be be large - because in most people who follow the sport's opinions it is such an unlikely result.oogiebe wrote: ↑28 Mar 2018, 20:08There's more betting on Parker than ANY OTHER OPPONANT of Joshua. Would like to see a breakdown of who is betting what. But I suspect most of the money on Parker is from people who think he can win.

Where is the money going?
Jeff Sherman, the race and sportsbook manager at Westgate, opened the fight with Joshua -1000 and Parker +650, with the total at 8.5 rounds (under -180, over +150).
"So far, slightly more Parker support brought the line to its current price of -900/+600, and a bit of support on the under," said Sherman. He's also expecting Joshua to be included in parlays with the NCAA Final Four games on Saturday, so he is not expecting the line to dip much farther. Westgate has about a 2-1 ratio of tickets being written on Parker thus far.
OMG...I feel like a troll...I don't even bet.
Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
It'll just be because he's been sold as a live outsider by Sky and has the 'unbeaten, never been down, world champion' line to use. People think a tenner to win seventy quid is a better option than seventy quid to win a tenner, even though the chances of the latter happening (and therefore profit) are so much greater.
I think the same thing happened with McGregor, but come fight time a massive amount of money came in for Floyd when he was so appealing to those who will chuck thousands at a short price.

Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
Since virtually nobody outside of joseph parkers immediate relatives is picking parker to win (i haven't seen ONE PERSON picking the lad), I don't know where this money is coming from. This is probably a ploy by bookies to get people backing Parker. They used to do that with donkey horses before the exchanges came along.
Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
ya, i havent seen one person pick parker who wasnt obviously on the windup based on there other posts.
really, its so hard to make a case for him. he doesnt have the tools to outbox aj and hes shown no power at fringe-world level.

Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
It’s not that surprising really, plenty of people on here have talked about putting something on Parker - not because they think he’ll win, but because the odds are so generous.
Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
This really. All it takes is a few hundred people to stick a tenner on Parker and the bookies would be looking at a twenty grand payout.Boxerbeetle wrote: ↑29 Mar 2018, 03:47 It’s not that surprising really, plenty of people on here have talked about putting something on Parker - not because they think he’ll win, but because the odds are so generous.
They have no need to invent fake prices anyway. Bets on Parker will be tiny compared to the standard Saturday afternoon football.
Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
It has more to do with the odds being a bit too wide than a mass of people genuinely believing Parker will win.
I wonder what the odds are for Price, i might be tempeted to put a quid on of he is 50-1 or something for an early KO.

Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
Both will come in light, neither will take chances and AJ is looking to box. The 4/1 a distance fight is massive, and if it does become technical rather than AJ imposing his strength then it has to be fairly close. Its only size that separates the two.
Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
So let me get this straight, more people are putting money on Parker, than they did with Wlad?
That doesn't sound right

Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
I've had a tenner on AJ points @9/2 and Parker KO 10/11/12 @33/1
Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
Thought that! There's so many casuals who can't see past AJ though and wouldn't have been that well versed on Wlad despite him being champion for years. You'll probably find from tomorrow there'll be an ass load of dough going on AJ.
Most hardcore fans seem to be swaying towards AJ in big numbers as well so fukk knows where this influx of money on Parker has came from?
Really like Parker. Would love to see him give AJ a proper go.
Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
It could just be PR by the bookies. If they phone the media & lie that boat loads of cash are coming in for Parker (even if it isn't), the papers run with it and gamblers then think there's something in it.... so bet Parker. It's like stock manipulation (pump and dump) - talk up a trading that you baught shares in at a low price, when the buzz happens dump it at a higher price then watch it crash.
There could be something in it i guess - i reckon popular opinion might be just be starting to sway against AJ from 'the next tyson' to 'lumbering oaf' - Parker is actually pretty well schooled and i suspect will have much faster hands. I suspect he'll get caught at some point though - I'm taking AJ in rounds 1-6 which is 2.7.
Re: Parker being heavily backed to beat Joshua
It will be the same reason that Floyd was at almost evens to beat McGregor. People believe the hype.
Parker and his team are doing a great job of making it a close fight.
