Sad news.

As said above very old school in many ways. Probably one for the strange records thread in that Chris lost against a guy with well over a hundred losses but also won against a future world champion.

Jesus. Read online he had been in the gym on Thursday so guessed it wasn't some long running thing we didn't know about.

He was the guy who got my Mrs into boxing. First fight my she saw on Hatton/Floyd night night was him v Jamie Mac. All the know-nothings (they would admit it, they were there for Ricky) were saying this scary looking guy was going to kill the young kid. Pointed out to her where the career trajectories were supposed to go. Fascinated her, and then a great fight sealed the deal.

Reading about and watching Chris Edward box dale Robinson in the first and second fight was a real inspiration for me back in the day. There were hardly any fly weights about so it stole my attention - I spoke to Chris and he sent me copies of his fights.

Former British champion Chris Edwards has tragically passed away at the age of just 41 from a suspected heart attack.
It defies belief that a man like Chris can die at such an age because he was renowned for his fitness as a fighter and the Liverpool Echo dubbed him “the long lasting battery” after he outpointed Paul Edwards (no relation) up there in a 12-rounder in 2011. Victory gave the Stoke slugger the British flyweight title for the second time in a remarkable career of highs and lows and he later outscored Oldham's Shinny Bayaar to win a magnificent Lonsdale Belt outright. Such a belt for such an unassuming man would have meant the world.
The rugged, sawn-off Edwards, muscles coming out of his ears, turned pro at 22 back in 1998 with absolutely no amateur experience and once lost six fights on the spin but he persevered and began notching up more wins than losses, including an upset stoppage of Huddersfield's Dale Robinson in the eighth of a 10-rounder in Stoke in 2006, and it became apparent that the longer the fight, the better for his gritty, no-nonsense style. In 2007 he outpointed Doncaster's Jamie McDonnell over 12 hotly contested rounds for the inaugural British super-flyweight title in Wigan - the same McDonnell who now holds the WBA bantamweight title which tells you what a big win that was and still is for Edwards, a win that nobody can take away from the loved ones he leaves behind. Chris, at the age of 31, after nine years in the trenches, had licked a future world champion and was British champion.
He lost the new title quickly but dropped down to flyweight and picked up British and Commonwealth titles with a four-round retirement stoppage of Grimsby's Wayne Bloy in Stoke in 2009 and he spent the final years of his career defending those titles - spilling blood and spitting defiance in a succession of bruising 12-rounders with men who had years on him. He was 36 when he finally retired after losing to Liverpool's unbeaten Kevin Satchell in 2012 but Chris made a lot of friends and brought real credibility to a flyweight division that has stagnated in the past and his premature death comes as a horrible shock to those in the trade.
