From time to time comments on the forum appear referring to 'casuals' in what seems (to me anyway) a derogatory manner. The general idea that comes across is that a casual is someone who knows little or nothing about boxing. Having once been called a casual on this forum (and being quite taken aback at the time) I wonder whether any of the more knowledgeable members might offer their own thoughts on the subject. For my own part I dot not profess to be any kind of expert but have followed boxing since I was about 12 y.o. and at one time ( albeit many moons ago) went to quite a few shows, both here and oversas. Took part in a few ISBA contests as well - with little success though as got flattened more than once.

Its a word I had never used or heard of about 12 - 18 months ago, or until AJ started to fill out places in record time. The term popped up on here, thats the first place I saw the term anyway.

I dont use it myself unless tongue in cheek. As the term 'Gate keeper' either which is another term I had never seen until about 12 - 18 months ago. Again this term has only ever popped up on this forum as far as im concerned anyway.

I have never used the term 'gate keeper' as i dont 'get it' and I dont suppose I will ever use it.

Fads come and go, like these 2 words.

I'm a casual! I was right in to boxing 15 to 20 years ago. Used to attend loads of shows. I got and am sick of all the politics and 'super' and 'regular' world champions. I also hated the PPV element of it all. I stopped following it for quite a while.

Nowadays I watch a few fights on the telly. I will pay for the odd PPV if worthy, maybe once a year. Keep up with the news on here really. Other than that I still can't be arsed with 90% of the sport. It's been it's own worst enemy!

Being a casual boxing fan is like a being football fan who only watches Premier League matches involving the top 6.

Nothing intrinsically wrong with it, people can do/watch whatever they want. It just means you have to take their views into context of their limited knowledge, that’s all.

I take a 'casual' to mean someone who is just interested in the big fights that are events rather than the content if the boxing.

In a football context, it would be like someone coming out and being a football fan during the world cup and euro's.

Nothing wrong with it, some people haven't got the time to invest fully in a sport

Nothing wrong with it but worse thing is when they watch 4 fights a year but walk around like they're experts like you say exactly the same as world cup and euros in the football

I think the word casuals is derogatory.
While there is nothing wrong with not being a full time, intensive fan, it more relates to the fella that considers himself an expert and says dumb things!
Or a fella who only supports one fighter and just watches it as a social thing!

I thought the term 'casuals' related to football hooliganism. I've seen recently at quite a few shows fighting breaking out related to football rivalry.

I have to admit I use the term in a derogatory way. The classic casual is someone who thinks AJ is the best fighter we've had in years and that boxing essentially revolves around Eddie Hearn and Matchroom. The arena tonight is full of casuals. You can tell as there's barely anyone actually watching the boxing yet despite it being a half decent undercard. They're probably all doing coke in the toilets or getting smashed and will come out when AJ comes on.

Why call folk casual fan as an insult? Maybe some folk join in here to learn? Should we be like the elite snobs and turn them away? I am a casual hockey fan. I watch only the playoffs. But I still know plenty about the sport. All are welcome so no need to group anyone. IMHO
