I want . . .
I want . . .
. . . to make the whole Boxing world stop using the term 'purse' and go back to using the better sounding battle money.
It is both more descriptive and manly.
London Prize Ring Rules 1853
Rule #23: . . . The battle-money shall remain in the hands of the stakeholder until fairly won or lost by a fight, . . .
We have such a colorful and appropriate phrase, steeped in Boxing's history, but instead we say 'purse.'
"Mayweather's battle money for the McGregor fight topped eighty million."
How do I do this?

Re: I want . . .
I don't know, but I wish you luck. Battle money definitely sounds cooler. Maybe if me and you start saying Battle Money in reference to a fighters pay it'll catch on and become a trend.
Re: I want . . .
Hmmm.... Floyd made 100's of millions off that fight ..... It was the "Snake River Canyon Motorcycle Jump" of Boxing.
There's a lot of great hype artists around today... They sold May-Mac and May-Pac damned well... I actually believe Boxing needs less hype and more logical and meaningful fights... George Foreman became a master businessman in handling his 2nd career... He got 3 cracks at the Heavyweight Championship because of the image he built... When he won it with the last KO punch he ever threw he fought 2nd rate challengers for evermore to hang on to the bauble.
That's a great business model for individual success... But if Professional Boxing were ever to become a sport instead of a business (nice for the fans) there needs to be a way to force logical matchups and get away from "safe" matchups.

lol!!!..boy Kalan is so very popular!!golden oldie wrote: ↑31 Mar 2018, 15:55Yet more bollox from you, giving leeches, parasites, and vermin far more credit than they are due. When television was first invented it was NOT the intention to create a hype machine monster.
However since that time the western word has bred a veritable army consisting of billions of couch potatoes, and as long as it takes no more effort than reaching for the remote control, they can be sold ANYTHING.
Re: I want . . .
The amount wasn't the relevant part of the statement why did you bother correcting that? What do 'hype artists' have to do with what word we use when describing a fighter's paycheck?Kalan wrote: ↑31 Mar 2018, 15:24Hmmm.... Floyd made 100's of millions off that fight ..... Did you read my post? Why the short bio of Big George?
I like to digress in conversations as well but that wasn't a digression, it was a non-sequitur reply.
Re: I want . . .
That's just what Kalan does. Tangents to nowhere...hijacking threads. Don't take it personally, he does this to everyone. Watch the hilarity of the response he gives. HE can't help himself. Go look at the Marciano Ellis thread....incredible.APerno wrote: ↑31 Mar 2018, 19:22The amount wasn't the relevant part of the statement why did you bother correcting that? Re: I want . . .
"Battle money"?
Because it sounds more "manly". Seriously?
It will never take. Apologies, but it just sounds silly. There's no reason to change what we call a fighter's pay.

Today...everyone is into labels. Call it what you want, just pay me. Ergo; I agree with you.sweetviolenturge wrote: ↑31 Mar 2018, 20:37 "Battle money"?

How we label things matters much, but granted but not in this case.sweetviolenturge wrote: ↑31 Mar 2018, 20:37 "Battle money"?

Yes seriously the word 'battle' sounds more manly than 'purse.' Are you serious about not hearing that difference?
I realize the origin for the usage of purse goes to purse = treasure, as in royal purse or national treasury, but today it has an effeminate tone.
The LPR rules uses 'battle money' and the MQB rules uses 'steak' - maybe the 19th century was just better with words than we are. (That's sarcasm, of course they were.)
Does it matter if we call it boxing or prize fighting?
I believe that matters too.
II'll scratch you off the list of supporters.
P.S. Change doesn't need a reason.
Re: I want . . .
Because battle money would be a hype word.... And Foreman became a pretty good hype artist who didn't talk a lot about money... He just made a lot of it because he knew how to sell himself and sell a fight...APerno wrote: ↑31 Mar 2018, 19:22The amount wasn't the relevant part of the statement why did you bother correcting that? Battle money?
It reeks of the 19th century, which isn't surprising if it's found in a 1853 book of rules.

Military has "Battle Pay." I'm not for this and believe it is irrelevant.APerno wrote: ↑03 Apr 2018, 15:06You don't read Shakespeare because it's dated language?SenorPipino wrote: ↑03 Apr 2018, 12:20 Battle money?

Uh? I never heard that, I always heard 'combat pay.' --- Word choice is never irrelevant, it changes the way we think about something. Battle money rings out the essence of the event, men fighting for a prize, purse doesn't. I am willing to compromise to 'prize money' but purse has got to go.oogiebe wrote: ↑03 Apr 2018, 15:07Military has "Battle Pay." We all need to put a little more effort into the way we speak, For mere convenience Twitter and texting are bastardizing our language. We need to go back to adding some poetry to our discourse.

Yes...you are correct. Combat pay. I'll just slither off...APerno wrote: ↑03 Apr 2018, 16:02Uh? No.... If you're going to invent new hype words for Boxing we've got enough of them now.... I like "purse" or "the money" or "the money split" .... Is battle money different from regular money? ....
