Prime Emile Griffith vs Prime Gene Fullmer
Prime Emile Griffith vs Prime Gene Fullmer
Who would win in their prime at middleweight? I think Griffith could pull a Tiger fight by out-boxing Fullmer behind his jabs and combinations from the outside to take a 15 round decision. Fullmer was a good swarmer but Griffith would counter him from long range. What is your opinion?
Re: Prime Emile Griffith vs Prime Gene Fullmer
If it's pre-Paret Griffith, I believe he takes out Fullmer, if post-Paret...not so sure.
Re: Prime Emile Griffith vs Prime Gene Fullmer
Tiger fought Fullmer 3 X and embarrassed him all 3 times... Tiger gave Gene 2 bad beatings and stopped him... In the middle match Fullmer ran like a thief and they gave him a draw he didn't deserve.... Tiger was older than Fullmer.
Emile Griffith beat Dick Tiger with ease twice... Griffith was too skillful for a wide open head knocker like Fullmer...
On the other hand Fullmer got the best of Sugar Ray Robinson 3 out of 4 times.

Griffith was a welterweight.
Fullmer was ,a middleweight as strong as a 200 pounder.
Compare their performances against Paret.

Re: Prime Emile Griffith vs Prime Gene Fullmer
Fullmer found he couldn't make the 160 pound weight any more in his title defense against Tiger.
In their first fight every round was tough. Tiger was great, but he had to fight for his life to come out ahead against a Fullmer weakened by repeated enemas to make weight the last days before the fight.
In their second fight Fullmer stood back an extra foot and outboxed Tiger in a pitty pat fight. Fullmer did not "run." Fullmer actually did enough to win a decision in the opinion of many.
In their third fight in Zaire, Fullmer showed up just to collect the purse. I would say he weighed about 185 pounds, based on the size of his midsection and the rest of him. Of course they had no real weigh-in in Zaire--they wanted the fight to go on.
Griffith fought a Tiger who had reached the point where he could no longer make the 160 pounds, just as Fullmer had when he lost the title to Tiger.
Proof of that is how well Tiger did after he no longer had to make the 160 pounds.
In their second "fight" Griffith fought a Tiger who was in the earlier stages of dying of cancer.
The emotional, fictional crap you post is pathetic.

Fullmer was not as strong as a 200-pounder.... Fullmer was weak and not up to fighting Light Heavyweights - much less Cruiserweights... Dick Tiger was older than Fullmer but he beat tamales out of Gene that he never ate... Dick Tiger did what Fullmer was afraid to do -- fight at Light Heavyweight... Tiger won the World Light Heavyweight Title and even fought Bob Foster as a Title Challenger.
Griffith beat Dick Tiger twice... But Fullmer got run over by Tiger.

Everything I post is true... Everything you post is a bs excuse... If Fullmer truly couldn't make 160 and "was strong as a 200-pounder." ... Why didn't Fullmer fight at Light Heavyweight like Tiger did so successfully???Sidney Carton wrote: ↑01 Apr 2018, 03:42Fullmer found he couldn't make the 160 pound weight any more in his title defense against Tiger.

Re: Prime Emile Griffith vs Prime Gene Fullmer
You posted that Fullmer was as strong as a 200 pounder... You pulled that out of your ass.
If that were true he would have fought at 175 if he couldn't make 160.

You pull every post you make of your ass.
Your system of "logic" is emotional and frantic.
Tony Zale never fought as a lightheavyweight. Does that make him 'weak' as a middleweight? Sure does in your emotional, knee jerk world.
Carlos Monzon,?
Marcel Cerdan?

Gene Fullmer's third fight with Dick Tiger was in Tiger's home country of Nigeria not Zaire (Republic of Congo) just to let you know.Sidney Carton wrote: ↑01 Apr 2018, 03:42Fullmer found he couldn't make the 160 pound weight any more in his title defense against Tiger.

Anyways, all of you have your own opinion, which I respect it. That decade of the 1960s was one of the good eras of middleweights.

So now if you kill someone you're a superior fighter? What's wrong with you!?Kalan wrote: ↑01 Apr 2018, 03:51Griffith killed Paret... Something Fullmer didn't accomplish.Sidney Carton wrote: ↑01 Apr 2018, 03:21 Griffith was a welterweight.

Re: Prime Emile Griffith vs Prime Gene Fullmer
You are correct. I was referring to the event as a negative impact on Griffith's killer instinct. He still would've grown into middleweight. Thanks for pointing that out.Sidney Carton wrote: ↑01 Apr 2018, 12:10pre-Paret Griffith was a welterweight.
He weighed 147 pounds.
Fullmer was a middleweight who trained down from 175 to make the 160 pounds.
Good luck.

Thanks for the correction.
Actually Tiger's third fight with Fullmer took place in Tiger's home of Biafra, the Christian, non muslim half of Nigeria at the time.

Re: Prime Emile Griffith vs Prime Gene Fullmer
Yeah.... and Fullmer got his ugly ass kicked in... Dick Tiger pounded him half to death and retired his ass.
On the flip side Fullmer beat Sugar Ray Robinson 3 out of 4.... There was a draw in there but I think Fullmer won that.
Emile Griffith was much better than all of the above... He easily beat Dick Tiger twice and Robinson ducked him.
