Joe Cortez airs views on fussy Cardiff officiating
Joe 'He's firm but he's fair' Cortez sat down with SiriusXM's Boxing Radio Show in the aftermath of Anthony Joshua's win over Joseph Parker to run the rule over what was unconventional officiating.
“Sometimes they put a referee who has good intentions but doesn’t have the experience. [The ref] was a nice guy, he’s been around a little bit, but he’s only done four world championship fights in the past," Cortez told SiriusXM.
"A fight of this magnitude – with Joseph Parker and Anthony Joshua – you need a referee in there with at least 25 world championship fights under his belt, is good under pressure, doesn’t take sides and be fair but firm like I was.
"They need to take action that the right time. There’s a couple of instances during the fight where he broke them up too early or when the tape/gauze was coming off around the gloves and hanging out and he was just letting it sit there then he would just tuck it inside the glove and it would come out again.
"There was a time where Joshua got a little hurt and he called time and brought him to the corner. Giuseppe is a nice guy but sometimes you gotta look and say ‘Who the hell put him in that position at that time?’ You gotta put someone in there with experience.”

Quite rich coming from a man who broke the action at every opportunity for Mayweather/Hatton.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑04 Apr 2018, 12:12 Joe 'He's firm but he's fair' Cortez sat down with SiriusXM's Boxing Radio Show in the aftermath of Anthony Joshua's win over Joseph Parker to run the rule over what was unconventional officiating.

I'm a bit disappointed that the Luxemburg thing didn't take off back when I think Haye vs Chisora was sanctioned by them to have their fight after Chisora was banned by the BBBoC. The incompetence of the BBBoC is too much. I have several mates who were on the cusp of getting into boxing but stopped watching after a bad reffing or judging job. IJL turned a mate off with his Macca vs McKenzie stoppage. I had a few mates over and had guaranteed them a good KO either way. Another mate was turned off by Fosters early stoppage of Groves and I could never really get him back into it. Both are big UFC fans. In addition to their refs constantly ruining fights with bad stoppages or bad decisions, the BBBoC apparently get this useless ref for a world title fight and make a show of the UK. Everyone was questioning why this ref got the job and if it was in fact the BBBoC who made that happen then it's yet another clanger they've had. Between Adam Smith on Sky and the BBBoC running things im not surprised boxing is a minority sport in the UK and yes it has been overtaken by UFCjameswilson wrote: ↑04 Apr 2018, 19:39Nightmare Roy wrote: ↑04 Apr 2018, 14:07true, it is fcuking wierd they put a guy in charge with so little experience, who makes that decision? Opinions vary with regards governing bodies etc, however boxing is far far more popular and generates far more revenue etc than UFCTheLeprechaun wrote: ↑04 Apr 2018, 20:38I'm a bit disappointed that the Luxemburg thing didn't take off back when I think Haye vs Chisora was sanctioned by them to have their fight after Chisora was banned by the BBBoC. Biggest conman in refereeing.
I recall Maidana saying he thought at one point Cortez was going to hit him, because he was hitting Amir Khan. He pulled him off Khan at every opportunity, even docked him a point after jumping right in front of his punches at one point i seem to recall.
His performance in the Hatton Mayweather fight has probably had more 'referee' discussions than Chavez v Meldrick Taylor. He destroyed one of the most anticipated British fights in the last few years.... and he'd previously referee'd Hatton in a completely different style previously !

Re: Joe Cortez airs views on fussy Cardiff officiating
Is this fuckin guy for real?
You could pick a punter from the crowd that would do a better job than Cortez did on many of his fights.
He deducted hatton a point vs Floyd for punching the top rope ffs. His botching of Mayweather vs Ortlz is the single worst referee incident i ever witnessed.
In Maidana vs khan he tried breaking Maidana from behind then took a point off (costing Marcos the fight) when Maidana caught Cortez on the chest with his elbow.
An absolute fuckin' clown, a narcissist that had to centre of attention and modelled himself on Mills Lane with his shitty catchphrase.
fornicate Joe Cortez & good riddance.

Bad & egotistical referee commenting on another bad referee !Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑04 Apr 2018, 12:12 you need a referee in there with at least 25 world championship fights under his belt, is good under pressure, doesn’t take sides and be fair but firm like I was
Re: Joe Cortez airs views on fussy Cardiff officiating
cortez probably loves stuff like this, any little bit of attention
Re: Joe Cortez airs views on fussy Cardiff officiating
Hatton v Mayweather was far worse, the ref was bad on Saturday but if you watch it back, parker is often the one lunging in and ducking. in with his head.
I think Smith's commentary highlighting it every time even though some were legitimate breaks made it worse thatln it was.

Re: Joe Cortez airs views on fussy Cardiff officiating
Unfortunately there are many examples of good referees who suddenly change later on in their career after a decent body of work . Some might find it suspicious especially when their behaviour appears consistently favourable to a particular fighter or promoter's fighters.
Whether it's through fear or favour I'm not qualified to say but there are examples in recent years from both sides of the Atlantic.
Cortez and Bayliss refereed too many Mayweather fights for my liking.
Mickey Vann refereed too many Hatton fights in my opinion. There are other examples.

Referees are appointed by sanctioning bodies and/or local commission i believe.Nightmare Roy wrote: ↑04 Apr 2018, 14:07true, it is fcuking wierd they put a guy in charge with so little experience, who makes that decision? Promotors or Governing bodies? Doesn't make sense at all.
Fees are paid by the promoter to the sanctioning body and/or local commission.
At least that is how i remember it working.

Not to mention the gladhanding with mayweather in the dressing room before the fight. Unbelievable.G0mez wrote: ↑05 Apr 2018, 07:44 Biggest conman in refereeing.

Always hated him for the Hatton fight, when Billy Graham spoke to him in the dressing room asking for a fair shake of the rub, how Ricky is perceived as a dirty finger and isn’t etc and he said he would be fair with both.
He wasn’t. Not to say Ricky would have won but to see FMJ have his body and ribs pumulled in the clinch etc would had answered a few questions.

Exactly, he was a first rate ref but towards the end of his career he started to think the crowd was there to watch him. And how many years experience did you have before 2008 you annoying pr1ck,how can he make comments like this after the performance he turned in that night? Then having his pic taken with mayweather after it all smiles,he is a hypocrite and at least the ref on saturday had the inexperience as an excuse what was yours?Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑04 Apr 2018, 12:12 Joe 'He's firm but he's fair' Cortez sat down with SiriusXM's Boxing Radio Show in the aftermath of Anthony Joshua's win over Joseph Parker to run the rule over what was unconventional officiating.

I agree james, ricky would never of won that night but would of caused mayweather abit of problems maybe and we would have seen how mayweather dealt with the pressure at that stage of his career.jamesmcdonnell wrote: ↑05 Apr 2018, 19:51I concur.
