Khan-Vasquez. Are the rumors true?

My grandkid just run in & tell me that my favorite fighter Sgt. Sammy "The Who Can Mexican" Vasquez Jr is fighting Amir Khan in London. He told me he seen it written all over Facebook but I cant confirm cause I don't twerk, Facebook or Myspace. Can any of you confirm if this is true or just propaganda?
1/2 the stuff they are saying these days on the social media is rubbish. I'd love to see Sammy KO that arrogant punk in liberal London.

Seriously, I have heard nothing about Khan's opponent, but expect it to be someone easy, despite what he says will be a BIG name.

Nothing has come out officially in the media or been announced on the promoters website or media accounts as of yet, so as far as I'm concerned it's all just speculation.

It won't be a record breaking opponent, it won't be a world title fight as lets be honest, Khan neither deserves or is ready for a world level fight in his first fight back in nearly 2 years out of the sport.

Hold on jewboypgh, there's a glimmer of hope for you on the horizon.

I've been devouring all the Amir Khan news that I can (yes, I'm hard up for excitement) and it appears that the Who Can Mexican is actually on the short list of opponents for the Brit's April 21 comeback.

Khan just inked a 3 fight contract with Eddie Hearn, with bouts planned in April, late summer and topped off with a winter 2018 SuperFight.

No opponents have been finalized but Vasquez (coming off 2 straight defeats) is a possibility in April.

Other possibilities are Renald Garrido (my choice. A smallish .500 fighter who can't punch), Josesito Lopez, Antonio DeMarco, Adrian Granados (too rugged) and Felix Diaz.

Even Ray Robinson and Bradley Skeete are being considered.

With Vasquez the loser of 2 straight and coming off a KO loss to ancient Luis Collazo, the Khan camp may consider him safe enough.

So who knows. I think the opponent will be announced this week.

What I want to know is if Khan is involved in a fight, can it really be labeled a SuperFight?

Thanks for the information. I was hoping to see Sammy fight a regional slob before getting into the deeper
waters with the likes of a Khan......but an opportunity is an opportunity. They are both coming off of brutal KO
losses, so maybe it makes for a good fight. Last year, I'd a thought Vasquez murders Khan. Maybe I'm just a local
homer!? Vasquez is still my ace either way.

Eddie Hearn said he sent a dozen names or so to Khan’s trainer, Virgil Hunter, and Sammy Vasquez is indeed included amongst that list. Other names he mentioned include: Josesito Lopez, Adrian Granados and Antonio DeMarco (with all four men aligned in some way or another to Al Haymon, either directly or by proxy).

Eddie Hearn is likely to initiate contract negotiations with at least two of those names, depending on the preferences of Khan’s team, as Matchroom tend to have substitute fighters waiting on stand-by should the original first choice opponent withdraw due to injury (as we saw when Takam stood-in for Pulev as AJ’s opponent).

So even if Matchroom has actually made contact with Sammy Vasquez Jr., he may never get to share the ring with Amir Khan.

There is only room for one expert here on boxrec, and Jip says he owns that title.
There is also only one poster that always tells the truth and is never wrong. That title is held by EO. He has the facts and links to back it up, and if you question that, please provide links and facts that dispute it.


As far as the Khan fight, one thing the next opponent for Khan needs to have is no punching power, or they won't consider it.

That's why I think Garrido might have the edge in the Khan opponent derby.

The Frenchman, a natural super lightweight, has an uninspiring 19-18-2 record. Only 3 of his wins have come by KO.

Coming off a devastating knockout defeat to Canelo nearly 2 years ago, the last thing the fragile Khan needs is to get in there with someone who can punch.

Instead he has to begin his comeback against someone who won't threaten his delicate whiskers

Garrido fits the bill nicely.

Well to be fair, Garrido isn't the stiff his record might indicate.

He has an aggressive, throws plenty of punches style, which is unusual for a Frenchman. And he's never been stopped.

Garrido upset then unbeaten Bradley Saunders in England and also another undefeated fighter Daoudo Sow in France.

He's also been in there will capable fighters like Cletus Seldin, Frankie Gavin, Ceferino Rodriguez and Sergio Fedchenko.

And no one punked him. They all had a battle on their hands.

But no, Garrido isn't a top 10 guy, but he doesn't figure to fall down as soon as Khan touches him, assuming he's the designated opponent.

He'll go rounds, maybe even the distance and he'll give Khan the work he needs after 2 years out of the ring.

And as I said, Garrido has no power, so the infamous Khan chin would be safe...although light punching Algieri was able to rock Khan on several occasions, so who knows?

A few months ago Khan announced he will return on April 21 against lightly regarded Canadian Phil Lo Greco.

Khan is a 20-1 favorite so you can go back to sleep.

I think his speed should be unaffected. His timing will probably be off, but that doesn't figure to matter all that much against Lo Greco.

But he's been a professional for almost 13 years and while he's won a few of those readily available world championships, he's yet to do anything special or beat anyone truly special.

And at 31, it's doubtful that Khan is going to suddenly become some sort of boxing dynamo and ascend the P4P ladder.

About 3 years ago, Khan was repeatedly rocked by light hitting Chris Algieri, and struggled to win a decision.

Of course not long after that, Algieri was easily decimated by Spence Jr., demonstrating just how wide a gap there is between Khan and the elites in the welterweight division.
