He had been an elite level boxer, before he moved up at MW. OK, he defeated Martinez (shot and injured, totally out of prime) and that's it. Honestly, I don't think that anyone would claim he has been the genuine champion at MW.
I don't want to diminish his achievement at WW and LMW, but it was a different story at MW.
Martinez was still rated p4p at the time. Cotto would've done that to any version of Martinez. Martinez never was on Cotto's level, nor Canelo's.
Cotto-Martinez = Bellew-Haye
Cotto would never beat fit/healthy Martinez at MW, the same thing could be said considering Bellew and Haye. Simple, very simple..............

Wow, such a horrible, horrific comparison. I'm surprised your brain didn't do any filtering there.

He's still boxing. He fights next April 21st. I was never impressed with him at heavy. Haye is another one. There are many.

There is no man who could convince me that Cotto has been better than Martinez (healthy version, MW). It might be something wrong with my brain, but I think so.

No, I have compared the situations, both Cotto and Bellew had moved up and defeated injured opponents.

One fighter is obviously better than the other. That's not debatable. In addition, one fighter would've easily beaten any version.

I think that you underestimate Martinez (prime version), we might agree about the rest.

Moved up in class or in weight?

Sugar Ray Robinson when he tried to take the Light Heavyweight Title from Joey Maxim and got stopped.

Ray Mancini when he stepped up and tried to fight Alexis Arguello.

Jose Napoles when the tried to take on Carlos Monzon..

Tommy Hearns when the moved up and tried to stop Marvin Hagler.

Mickey Walker, former Welterweight King -- when he moved up and tried to beat Max Schmeling.
