Joe Frazier vs Ron Lyle

Post by DrDuke »

Prime vs Prime,

Frazier of late 60s - early 70s against Lyle in the shape of his Ali, Shavers and Foreman fights.

Who would you pick to win and why?

If this is 15 rounds I like Frazier late with a gradual wearing down. He might well have to pick himself off the floor to do it but I would see this as fight where both of them come out of it diminished. Two very tough men.

Lyle was tough, no doubt about that, but Prime Frazier had more class. Joe had been more elusive in the offence, he could provide more versatile combinations. Furthermore, Lyle was vulnerable to left hook and we all know, what kind of left hook Joe possessed.

Styles make fights & in this one, I'm going for the upset with Lyle prevailing via KO5.
I just think that Lyle would have been all wrong for Joe & that he'd have been walking into hard shots all night long. Especially if Lyle got his underrated left jab on track.

I agree... Lyle would take a page from George Foreman and use his size and strength on Frazier... He didn't grip the floor quite as well as George did or rip those uppercuts and 45's quite as hard... but he took huge blasts from Earnie Shavers and kept dealing until the referee moved in to save Shaver's life... Ronnie was a good sized dude and could hit.

Frazier.

Much speedier than Lyle.

Lyle needed to catch you coming in. He seldom did that against elite fighters.

Once Frazier got inside, he would own Lyle. I never thought of Lyle as a particularly good inside fighter.

Lyle had decent boxing skills and was heavy handed. But I don't put him in the Shavers, Foreman category of puncher.

He was a B++ fighter. Frazier was A.

He would wear Lyle down and take him out within 10.

Frazier wasn't speedy... He came in dead last in the Super Star sprint competition... Joe was a waddling duck trying to keep up with greyhounds... It was the most laughable performance since Frazier tried to compete in a swimming race.

Frazier didn't slip punches in a speedy fashion either... Foreman made duck soup out of Slo-Jo in 2 rounds... Frazier's best punches couldn't make the powerful Foreman blink.. George was too big, tall, and strong for Joe.

Ron Lyle did much better against Foreman... He nearly matched Foreman in height and size... He stretched Foreman out on the canvas TWICE, nearly putting him out for the count... Foreman finally prevailed in a high-risk slugout.

Lyle went toe-to-toe with Shavers... He overpowered Earnie and beat him to trash... Ronnie was too big for Earnie..

Way too big and strong for Frazier as well... Remember, he was a raw rook when he fought Quarry.

Pick up the 2nd video at 1:49 to see how fast Frazier wasn't.

Frazier's speed in a swim competition is very relevant.

Frazier was even slower at applying postage stamps to Christmas presents...so if he couldn't lick a box....it stands to reason he couldn't box a lick.

Also, who the hell do you folks think the singer who sang the Theme song for "Pettycoat Junction" was talking about when he sang the lyrics. "That's Uncle Joe, he's a movin' kinda slow, at the Junction.....Pettycoat Junction.

You guessed it.....Slow Smokin Joe himself.

Instead of getting a really good swimming coach, Frazier asked the coach at the local Y to teach him... For me, if you want to learn anything you need a coach who's damned good at it---and who's a damned good teacher as well...They had to teach Frazier how to dog paddle first... When they moved to Free Style Frazier found it difficult to coordinate his breathing, stroking, and flutter kicking... He wasn't a natural as they say.

They told Joe not to worry....the other athletes weren't swimmers either... Just concentrate and swim as fast he could... Nobody did a decent flip turn that I remember--or swam like a swimmer... Frazier bounced up on the starting platform ahead of the other swimmers.. He set up in the blocks with a lot confidence... Hmmmmm I thought "Great psyche job Joe... You've obvious been on a starting platform before.." His dive was horrific... but I was still hopeful for a second or 2...

Lyle was a tough old boy.

But Frazier's pressure and power would be too much for him. Ron would be doing well to last the course.

Joe would weather some early storm to stop Ron late, after 13. But Frazier after FOTC could lose to Ron by decision.

Really? You don't think it would be a mini version of Foreman/Frazier?

No, I think Ron was strong, but George had a special type strength. And I still feel that if he was prime Frazier that day in Jamaica, George may have had some problems. Could see Ron putting Joe down around 2, possibly 3 times however.

A repeat of the Frazier/Bonevena fight I suppose. Ok!

Naaahhh.... Bonavena was a little teeny toddler who barely walked around on club feet... Oscar couldn't even get into the military in Argentina because he was ruled physically disabled with his club footed condition...

It's going to be like Foreman-Frazier -- cuz Ronnie was big, tall, strong, and could hit real good... :OhYes: Yes he could

My comment was in reference to another's post on Frazier winning but going down 2 or 3 timss. Like the Bonavena fight. Slow your reading down and understand what is being discussed. It's very annoying Mr. Expert.

I'll read at the speed I like and comment as I please...

I knew you were talking about Bonavena because he knocked Frazier down twice -- when Frazier was every inexperienced... That's not relevant to me and I didn't feel the need to explain it... Bonavena is nothing like Lyle just because he scored a couple of knockdowns... He's a very short stubby left hooker and Lyle was a tall, strong fighter who tried very hard to box well (often unsuccessfully cuz he had limited coaching) and punched hard with both hands.

Therefore I reiterated why Lyle was a closer match to Foreman than Bonavena.
