Youngest Brit to win Commonwealth, British, Euro and World title?

Post by elporchio »

Evening,

Anyone know the youngest Brit to win the Commonwealth, British, European and finally World title?

I know Cleverly was 24 when he did but I’m sure there was someone younger?

Post war I'd say Conteh, I think Turpin won the World Middleweight title at 23 as well but I don't think he won the Commonwealth until afterwards.

When you think about it,it's a brilliant achievement at that age.,unlikely to be beaten anytime soon.

It is a brilliant achievement. not many have won all four. I know Lennox did, but I can't see anyone beating Conteh's record and Conteh did not have easy opposition either

Yeah, won it and defended it twice in the space of 3 months to win it for keeps, never won a Commonwealth or World belt though.

Almost Colin Jones if he had got the decision rather than a draw against Milton McCrory

I agree - however .........

Just checking his record, he won the British, Commonwealth and European titles all in one fight by beating Chris Finnegan.

Conteh was so good he won the European title firstly from the strong and gutsy German Rudiger Schmidtke and then won the British and Commonwealth titles from Chris Finnegan in a triple title encounter. He later outclassed Argentina's favoured Jorge Ahumada to win the world title on a magnificent night at Wembley in 1974 and ruthlessly disposed of Americans Lonnie Bennett and Len Hutchins in subsequent world title defences, two men who got to know all about John's Liverpool kiss. Management and trainer disputes prevented him from ruling for years and years. He thought he could do it all himself and brought in family members (shades of Naz) and wound up earning a mere £1,000 for a defence in Denmark against Alvaro "Yaqui" Lopez. He also broke his right hand a couple of times because his hands were delicate and trainer George Francis, who had been ousted, had a special way of wrapping them. He eventually lost his title outside the ring when he listened to his family and chose to avoid mandatory challenger Miguel Angel Cuello of Argentina, who he would have toyed with.
In the twilight of his career, reunited with Francis and Mickey Duff, John went 15 thrilling rounds with the monstrous Matthew Saad Muhammad in Atlantic City.

There's not too many British fighters who have done the "clean sweep" (for want of a better term).
But I'll throw a few out anyway;

Billy Joe Saunders
Jamie McDonnell

Rendall Munroe maybe?

Yep, it’s a cracking achievement, Tyson Fury has won them all, hasn’t he? I don’t think Munroe ever won the Lonsdale belt, I might be wrong...
