If I was Warren I would choose an American opponent

Post by actjac »

to add some interest to Tyson Fury's comeback outside of their own back yard.. Given the fact that his comeback fight on June 9th is all about him and the expectations are not that high it is all about his performance and not necessarily the caliber of opponent. However I would match him against a competitive opponent with a credible record on paper and against an Ameican. Keep in mind that this fight will only be closely scrutinized by boxing forum posters and boxing insiders but the greater general sports public will watch out of curiosity.

-John Wesley Nofire
-Joe Hanks
-or maybe even pull David "Nino" Rodriguez out of retirement (who has been out the same length of time)

Shannon Briggs should be the ideal patsy. Gets a lot of attention because of his mouth, but he's shot to hell and would pose virtually no threat beyond the 2nd round.

And the threat wouldn't be ALL that threatening in the first 2 rounds either. Fury could just move around and clown around for a few rounds, and there you go...dangers gone pretty much because Briggs is huffing and puffing.

Though he is an American unfortunately Briggs is old and very inactive. . . .It would be more of a circus act and just detour the path of a mega bout with either Wilder or Joshua.

Well...if it's a credible, but not too dangerous you're looking for there's lots of choices.

Chris Arreola, Eric Molina, Bermane Stiverne or Gerald Washington (though the latter two might be a bit tougher than you'd want for your first fight back)

It's just taking so long.
Supposed to be April, and if an easy opponent could have been found, it should have happened already.
Briggs please no! I would have accepted Mansour but not poor old Briggs...

Briggs is too dangerous. Carl Drummond, or someone not quite top 100.

I think Gerald Washington is perfect. Would be tough to stop Fury's first time out and not so good as to cause a great danger.

Is Arreola still active?

The other guys probably would want more money than Warren is willing to part with.

And lets face it. In the UK, Fury's return is a major event. The opponent is just being brought in because the rules state that there has to be one.

First time out, whoever they put in there with Fury will be fine with the public. They'll gobble it up.

It didn't hurt Mike Tyson when he opted to take on a big no-hoper like McNeeley.

Fans didn't care about a competitive fight. They just wanted to see Tyson. Plenty of curiosity.

It will be the same with Fury. They can put him in with Kevin Johnson or Julius Long. Fans will still turn out in droves.

Thats why I say it should be someone like:
-John Wesley Nofire
-Joe Hanks
-or even pull David "Nino" Rodriguez
but it should be an American with at least a credible record.
