A continually declining amount of money on offer proved the last straw and forced Gary O’Sullivan to pull out of the running to face Gennady Golovkin on May 5th.
O’Sullivan had agreed to the general offer Team ‘GGG’ put out for potential replacements. That offer was less than half what the Paschal Collins-trained fighter was rumoured to be receiving for his proposed September showdown with Canelo, yet the Cork man remained happy to go ahead with the fight because of the number of titles he stood to win.
However, when the show was removed from pay-per-view and the venue changed, the purse dropped again and O’Sullivan and his team felt it best to pull out of the race.
“Money-wise it’s not on PPV and the fight’s not worth the money that it should be,” said O’Sullivan.
“They dragged it out for over a week and we got nothing official. And the money kept on diminishing as well.
“They made an initial offer I agreed to then they came back with half of that.”
For whatever reason this thing is going down the pooper, the card should've been canceled once the news came out. Or postpone for a later date. Not sure what kind of contingency there could've been on a match such as this.
Golovkin’s management is going to wait to see what happens with Canelo before they make their decision whether to fight on May 5th.
154lbs contender Vanes Martirosyan is the frontrunner to face Golovkin on May 5, but with the decision being made by Team GGG on Wednesday or Thursday, it suggests that they could very well wait to fight again until September for the Canelo fight. In other words, Golovkin would wind up giving up his May 5th date and sit inactive for an entire year until Canelo is able to fight him in September.
”At some point, we’re going to run out of time,” Tom Loeffler said to AP. ”Right now, it’s three weeks from Saturday. The arenas are all still working with us. The networks are working with us. … We’re under the gun now just to save May 5.”
This is the sort of thing that can happen when no contingency plan is in place.

You really need to tell people how you would have done this better. What’s your contingency plan in detail, including the opponents name. Then we can all learn from you as it seems this is easy...barely an inconvenience for you.

I had asked that and got no response.
I’m guessing he won’t respond. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. And for the record nor would I when it comes to these things but I can appreciate that it would be a complex matter and feel sympathy for team Ggg to be in this position.

What could possibly be a contingency to GGG V. Canelo that would work? Nada.

Yea it’s a unique situation. Canelo was the attraction that pulled out. I’ve seen it where the attraction wants to stay in like AJ pulev takam but this situation is not comparable. Not to say golovkin isn’t a draw but he’s as dangerous and offers considerably less money and exposure than someone like Canelo.
What I believe they should've done was to sell the show to HBO or Showtime, and work out what fighter to face depending on which one had the highest bid. Wouldn't end up a total loss like this sh#tstorm.

That’s an idea....finding a suitable opponent would be hard though. You’d want to allow golovkin a full training camp for any fighter on the world level imo. I think that would be fair especially if they have a completely different style to Canelo.

The idea is that it should have happened as soon as Alvarez was found to have had a MIS-STEAK in this med report. That would've provided enough time and hedged the monies by bringing in HBO/SHO as soon as possible. This way you could postpone two three weeks. Now it's insanity. It's two weeks away! It'll be canceled.

Yea it’s got to be cancelled now. It’s a terrible situation. Ggg just wanted to fight Canelo and now is receiving flak for not putting on a fight in a complex situation. I’d be happy if they found someone decent and delayed it...giving just enough prep time. I wouldn’t like golovkin to wait for Canelo...but Canelo is the money.

You guys keep exchanging comments about my personal ability, as a weak and intellectually inept attempt to undermine my credibility, but you forget that other promoters have regularly implemented contingency plans for their events but Team GGG didn't attempt to do so for theirs.
Criticise me as much as you want, but my argument is something that you cannot undermine.
I'm not saying that out of arrogance either, since you naively think you're defending GGG's honour, whereas I feel that his team have let him down.

We are just debating here. Your arguments have not been persuasive. You have been unable and/or unwilling to answer a number of question aimed at you directly. You are not contributing positively. You are merely recycling the same tired argument criticizing Team Golovkin yet if someone criticizes you it appears you take it personally. Imagine what Team Golovkin would say about your criticisms. Sometimes in life you have to be able to take it as much as you dish is out.

So Unlightened one was aiming at me? Are you crazy?!
Mate I dont even know lol! He's whole thing is a mess. He can't even acknowledge the situation is complicated. His whole argument is that Team Golovkin should have prepared for this unfavorable situation with a perfect plan that went off without a hitch and putting it together would be barely an inconvenience for a layperson like he is.
Interestingly, he has reserved judgement on Canelo, who has already tested positive twice yet has judged Golovkin and his team as being incompetent whilst relying on twitter comments and internet news articles. It's foolishness! Also using the AJ Takam example, which is materially different to the current circumstances further exhibits his foolishness. It needs to be said. He needs to be able to take criticism. I do. I'm not perfect.
How would I have handled this complex and unfavorable situation. I don't know. I would be terrible for the job. I'm just a casual fan but I can at least appreciate the situation is a difficult one and have sympathy for Golovkin.

I'll leave it with this quote....
"In hindsight everything is much clearer."
That's a lot of words to concede that you don't really know what you're talking about.
All we know for certain is that Team GGG have failed to implement a contingency plan and they had almost seven weeks opportunity to do so.
Throw as many insults of a personal insult to me as you are capable of, but you haven't demonstrated any ability to undermine my actual argument.
Keep trying though, because I'm pretty sure the more intelligent members of the forum will pick-up on your penchant to attack the arguer rather than the argument itself.
Fights unfortunately get postponed or even cancelled all the time.
It's a hazard of the profession. It's not a team sport. If one guy goes out for whatever reason, you just can't just magically replace him with an interchangeable part off the bench.
Because it's a high profile event involving Golovkin, this mess gets a lot more ink and discussion than other similiar scenarios.
I suspect that if Golovkin-Canelo had been scheduled for May 25 and not the revered Cinco de Mayo date, Golovkin probably would have packed up and headed home once Canelo withdrew.
But the powers that be seem obsessively intent on preserving the sacred--and lucrative--May 5 date, no matter what obstacles are presented.
Therefore we're all captive this ongoing circus that may not be resolved until May 5 actually rolls around.
What is so hard to understand, Pipi? Golovkin is 36, and he cannot waste any time. Due to the Clenbnelo's team demands, he already skipped a fight last summer. Now the dirty cheater is at fault for killing their fight. Golovkin spent time and effort for training, and doesn't want to have that wasted. The date itself doesn't matter.

Clenbnelo...that's hard to pronounce, how about the guy who made the "mis-steak."

He didn't make a mis-steak. He did mis-cycling.
That is why I call it a mis-steak. It's sarcastic. Get a sense of humor bro!
