The Training methods of old tyme boxers

Post by Caractacus »

How did they train up until the time of Gentleman Jim Corbett ?
Did they usually have a day job to support themselves or what ?

They used many of the methods the London Prize Rules fighters of the bare knuckle era developed over hundreds of years... Running... sprinting... rope skipping... bag punching... sparring... pushups... pullups... situps... weight lifting... rope climbing... tree chopping... Whatever they could think of to make themselves stronger, faster, and more durable.

There's various Manuels from the LPR era that speak about training.

I've seen notes on Sullivan's training, it was hard.

Didn't Sullivan like walk/run for about 25 miles or something and then head back to camp for sparring ?

All I know is he was way overweight for Corbett... Soused, and out of shape...

Sullivan was as light as 190 for some of his fights---which was his preferred weight---but he was frequently fat.
