Does anyone remember the Tim Witherspoon vs Carl "The Truth" Williams fight?

Post by sweetviolenturge »

It took place on the undercard of the Bobby Czyz - Robert Daniels TVKO PPV back in 1992 which, I know for a fact that I watched, but I don't recall any details about the fight at all. It must have been close ( I would assume ) as it was a split decision & I have a vague recollection of Witherspoon being the one that was wobbled at one point during the contest. Other than that though, I have no memories of the bout at all.
Details anyone?
Speaking of which, does anyone else have fights that they know they saw but have no memory of? I have a few others as well, I'm sure but this one really stands out.

Yeah.... They were both fat, slow, and unmotivated... The fight was lackluster and Witherspoon edged it.,

Fights that made no impression on me whatever were Lewis's fights with Mavrovic and Tucker... Tyson's fights with Tucker and Smith... Holmes' fights with Williams and I think it was Lucien Rodriguez... Ali's fights with Lubbers, Evangelista, Mathis, Foster, and Spinks 2... Wladimir Klitschko's fight with Sultan Ibragimov... Joshua's fight with Parker wasn't the greatest ever.

But the all time worst fight I ever saw was Williamson vs Byrd... Yeah. You wouldn't want to sit through that.

Remember Jack London's famous line... "Fight? ... There was no fight."

I know. Isn't that funny?
I can remember the main event of the evening well enough what with Daniels keeping it close but Czyz coming on to outwork the bigger, stronger Daniels down the stretch to win.
But, other than that image of Williams rocking Witherspoon with a right hand toward the end of a round I have no recollection of the fight at all. Which is odd. As I can recall far less meaningful & far ( I imagine ) duller Witherspoon fights vs the likes of "Bigfoot" Martin, Tom Glesby & others far more vividly for no apparent reason.

I tried to find the fight on Youtube but this clip is all they had of it. The highlight that I vaguely recall.

It's ironic that the fighter that's known for having the solid beard of the duo is the one that wound up getting rocked in this fight. Can you imagine if Williams could take a shot as well as Witherspoon could throughout his career? He'd have definitely won a title or two for sure somewhere along the way.

Williams would never have won a damned thing -- except by accident like Leon Spinks and Michael Bentt.

Spinks got the perfect fight at the perfect time.... Bentt had chinny Tommy Morrison in front of him.

A Title opponent like that is stupendous luck... Truth Williams was so easy to hit with left hooks it was ridiculous... But some fighters have very poor hooking power and sharpness... Holmes probably threw better hooks in his 40's than his 30's.

Seriously?
Williams would have almost certainly won a title had he had just a bit more punch resistance. Especially when one considers that he was active during an era in which we had titlists like Bruce Seldon, Oliver McCall, Michael Bentt & others. Men that had he gotten a shot against he may have very well have beaten without an enhanced chin.

This fight a long with many others, shows how close several fighters of the 1980s and early 1990s were. People love Witherspoon, but how much better was he than Carl Williams?

Williams and Renaldo Snipes were right up there with Dokes, Coatzee, Page, Thomas, Tubbs, Berbick, Smith, etc. well as Witherspoon.
If actually take a look at their fights you can see that. There is actually a lot of data to go on since there many fights between each other and with other common opponents.
Somehow, Witherspoon gets rated well above the rest, while Williams is almost forgotton.
