LOL... A nice touch... He knew Cooney was never going to fight again... and was in no condition to ever fight again.Caractacus wrote: ↑19 Apr 2018, 14:33 Foreman told a newspaper reporter just after the fight that Cooney's punches felt like "small explosions"
detonating off of him.
Gerry Cooney, his.

Re: Gerry Cooney, his.
Cooney, like a lot of white guys back in the day, was brought up too quickly, and didn't face the necessary opposition before being put in front of a top-notch fighter.
Back when I was a teenager, there was a boxer named John Collins from Chicago. Pretty good fighter with a solid right hand, good looks, etc. --his managers pushed him up through the ranks as fast as they could, until he went from fighting in the clubs, to fighting Tony Sibson.
We were like "hold on here ...John is gonna get killed!" Sibson was a wrecking machine back then, and probably would have been middleweight champion if not for Hagler.
Well ya'll know what happened next
Same thing happened to Cooney when he faced one of the most underrated heavyweight champions, Larry Holmes.

Tony Sibson was a bum... Very easy to hit... He got KO'd in the 1st round by 6-0 Lottie Mwale when he had 25 fights...
Cooney wasn't moved too fast... He wasn't a good boxer because he didn't have a boxing coach... He couldn't slip or duck punches... That needs to be something you practice every day and it didn't look like he did...
Gerry loaded his hooks like Razor Ruddock.. If you're that big, tall, and long, you focus on boxing skills, footwork, and the jab.. It takes a coach like Emmanuel Steward to talk sense into these guys.. You don't focus on the left hook and liver shots if you're big, tall and long - even if that's your strength... You get the jab and your feet done first....and defense.. Cooney landed the jab because he was so tall and long... He didn't make a weapon of it or have any sophistication with it... And you need a damned good straight right hand if you're so damned big, tall, and long... Why make your job difficult?
It's like Alexander Dimitrenko who is 6'7" tall with a massive reach and no jab, no stance, and no footwork... Why are you even a boxer if you don't want to work on your skills and you don't want to use your height, weight, and reach?

Re: Gerry Cooney, his.
come on now ...Sibson a bum?
the guy who knocked him out was 21-0 before losing his first fight against Matthew Saad Muhammad, and is considered one of the best fighters to come out of Africa. He wasn't some club fighter.
That would be the only time Sibson was stopped in 51 fights. To say he was a bum is just crazy. Sure, he had some defensive issues, but he was a terrific fighter.

Sibson was no bum. Not great, but certainly not a bum. His Kayo of Minter came within a two year period that Minter beat Antuofermo twice and lost a close decision to the tough Syrian, Mustafa Hamsho. I give he guy credit...decent record; decent fighter.Silas1066 wrote: ↑19 Apr 2018, 23:01 come on now ...Sibson a bum?

Lottie Mwale had 6 fights when he knocked Sibson out quickly.. I just thought Sibson was an accident looking for a place to happen.. It wasn't just defensive issues, he had many problems.. I also thought Wladimir K was a disaster looking for a place to happen before he got with Steward.. Like Sibson, he had defensive and offensive issues.. You don't have to get knocked out by a club fighter cuz they generally can't expose your problems.. Amir Khan still has many flaws and he's been a World Champion a couple times.. Many World Champions are there cuz of vacant Titles and bs opponents.Silas1066 wrote: ↑19 Apr 2018, 23:01 come on now ...Sibson a bum?

Maybe bum was too strong. He wasn't a good fighter... My post was 90% about Cooney and his problems... That got lost.
