Gervonta Davis vs. Jesus Cuellar - April 21, 2018

For the WBA title.

“The April 21 card features Adrien Broner, Jermall Charlo and Gervonta Davis – three of boxing’s “must-see” attractions - in highly competitive matchups against top contenders,” said Stephen Espinoza, President, Sports & Event Programming, Showtime Networks Inc. “Adrien Broner is once again proving that he’s willing to take on the toughest available opponent in consensus top-10 welterweight Jessie Vargas. Hugo Centeno Jr. represents another tough challenge for knockout artist Jermall Charlo as he continues his quest to become a two-division champion. Gervonta Davis vs. Jesus Cuellar is another great matchup, with two power-punchers facing off for the 130-pound world title.”

Overall.. A very good card IMO.

I just did a bit of looking into. Realized Cuellar has not fought since he last lost to Abner Mares in December 2016.. He's literally done nothing and the WBA are sanctioning him for their 'SUPER' title, even after they said they wanted to reduce the number of world titles.

Never fought for the whole of 2017..

Just discovered something disturbing for Davis fans...not that will affect this fight, but could be bad news for the LONG RUN:

http://www.espn.com/boxing/story/_/id/2 ... g-new-camp
"After the Fonseca fight, Davis wasn't sure what he was going to do but knew he needed to get out of Baltimore to focus on his career. Then Broner, a friend of his who he views as an older brother figure, invited him to come to his first training camp with Cunningham, a former police officer with a no-nonsense attitude and vast experience.

Adrien invited me to come down here to West Palm Beach to check out the camp. He said I should come to Florida to train with him and Kevin," Davis said. "So I came down, I saw Kevin's routine and I really liked it. There were a lot of distractions in Baltimore and I think they were a problem for me. I needed to straighten my head and focus on the things I have to work on. It was time to set my camp somewhere else.

Davis said the change of scenery has been good for him and that he is not only training better but he is also staying out of trouble.

"We have a big house that the coach provided for us," Davis said. "We all live together -- Adrien and I. We go swimming and to the movies. We just chill. We are being responsible. No South Beach, no clubbing. Just training hard."
Cunningham is a good trainer, but I'm worried about the thuggish influence of Adrien Broner. Anyone who is looking to be mentored by Broner is looking for trouble.

It may work for a while but the more time he spends with Broner the more he is asking for trouble. Gervonta has already tasted the thug life in Baltimore and Broner is NOT the kind of guy he needs to get him away from that nonsense since Broner is a thug himself.

davis is deffo a guy who you wonder if outside influences could hold him back from fulfilling his excellent talent. i know he had legal issues last year and also lost his belt on the scales

hes very fortunate to be walking straight back into a title fight vs a cherry picked opponent who is from 126 and hasnt won in 3 years or fought in 2. its a bit like ggg vs vanes, except not a short notice replacement fight, and for vacant title.

Davis is a big boy. I don't think he'll be subject to any peer pressure from AB.

He's been friends with Broner for quite a while.

Broner's out of ring behavior apparently doesn't faze him.

I doubt that Broner can actually influence Davis' lifestyle choices to any degree.
Davis hasn't exactly been a pure angel.

Only time will tell. I think BECAUSE Davis has his own thuggish tendencies and Broner's craziness doesnt faze him, Gervonte really looks up to him and he runs the risk of going deeper into the thug life.

I think Gervonta has a great future and would hate to see it derailed because of his bad decision. The decision to leave B-more was a good one, but his trust in Broner could turn out to be just as bad.

All in all, birds of a feather....

And BTW, Davis is a sizeable 12-1 favorite over Cuellar, who talentwise is probably the best fighter that Tank has faced.

Broner probably a good influence compared to some of the guys in Baltimore.

I wont dispute that...the thuggish homies in B-more are the worst influence, but Broner is not much better. Hopefully the trainer they now share (Kevin Cunningham) will do his best to minimize any bad influence from Broner outside the ring.

There's a number of similarities between Davis and Broner but they vary in many respects.
Just look at the way they throw their punches, the way their shoulder, long arm, neck and curve forearm moves is quality, a lot of brothers have this.
Davis ... for now has an almost Juan Manuel Lopez thing about himself, it's all done in the pocket with the outgoing punches going through the cycles.
Defence based off distance reflexes and timing rather than take a shot and see how you take it.
I've seen this many times.

.

Do you really think that the stern Cunningham wants to babysit 2 supposed adults?

Cunningham's is supposed to be a drill sergeant, no nonsense type.

If Broner and Davis eff up, he won't pat them on the head and plead with them to be good kids.

Cunningham will kick them in the arses and tell them to take a permanent home.

Not sure if it's boxing drama.

Cunningham looks like a good guy.
What's his style drive ... he can take them a good distance but does he have the extra at the highest level.
