Boxers with brilliant names
Re: Boxers with brilliant names
Isn't there a Kid Killer
Re: Boxers with brilliant names
Yeah... I chatted with David Kotey who knocked Kid Killer out... He started and ended Killer's career.
We talked about Kotey's 2nd Danny Lopez fight... He got taken out too... He toyed with the idea of calling himself Killer Kotey... He had a very mild temperament. Gentle and soft spoken as a flower.
Kermit Cintron started getting his ass kicked in as soon has he took on the nickname Kermit "The Killer"

Re: Boxers with brilliant names
It's actually spelled Donovan Ruddock...
I always liked the name Lummox Lewis - which a sports writer called Lewis.. Lewis was a great fighter, but very pretentious.. I loved to see people pull his chain..
I loved it when he got flattened with a shot, but it was amazing.... Lewis didn't turn a hair... He just lost the Heavyweight Championship of the World -- but the casual way he talked about it was like he just lost a sock at the laundromat.

Re: Boxers with brilliant names
Chu Chu Malave.
Pronounced Choo Choo Muh-Lah-Vey, for the benefit of the Spanish challenged.
It just rolled off your tongue.
A pretty decent 1970s east coast lightweight who was known more for his good looks and trademark long, flowing hair.
It was a pretty radical appearance for a boxer back then, and the charismatic Chu Chu was the darling of the Hippie and entertainment crowd.
And he could fight pretty effectively too. Chu Chu was good enough to win two decisions over Harold Weston.
His career ended when he was thrashed by former champion Ken Buchanan in a nationally televised 1973 bout.
Malave went on to parlay his appearance into an acting career, although I don't think I've ever seen his roles on television.
But I still love that name--Chu Chu Malave.

Most Mexican fighters with the nickname Chuchu (different from the two separate words Malave used. For Mexican fighters it's one word) are named Jesus.
Malave's true name was Edwin. But I don't recall anyone ever using it. He was always Chu Chu Malave, never Edwin.

I never figured out why he used "Chucho" instead of "Chuchu."
I'd ask him but sadly he passed away several years ago.
Re: Boxers with brilliant names
Lionel Rose was a great name... He beat Jesus "Chucho" Castillo in the Inglewood Forum... Rose fought a great fight and won a legitimate victory, but the Mexican fans weren't pleased with the decision... They rioted and threw anything not tied down... Then they went out to the parking lot and groups of them overturned cars.
There was a massive police presents when Ruben Olivares fought Rose... That was closing the barn door after the horse ran away... Olvares was undefeated in more fights then Mayweather ever fought -- with almost all KO wins...
They sky seemed to be the limit for Olivares, but he went soft... It was fame, women, night life and the whole bit... Danny Lopez, was not a particularly good boxer -- but he easily knocked Olivares out when the Mexican was only 28... Olivares kept fighting til he was past 40 and taking beatings from guys he wouldn't hire as sparring partners in his best form.

Fun fact: The name Chu Chu came from "Get off of my porch or I'll grab my rifle and Chu Chu"SenorPipino wrote: ↑02 May 2018, 16:20Probably thousands.oogiebe wrote: ↑02 May 2018, 16:14I wonder how many Chu Chu's there were. Re: Boxers with brilliant names
Much as I hate the guy, I don't know if there's ever been a better name for Boxer than Tyson Fury.
Especially after Mike Tyson came along and forever stamped "Tyson" as a badass fearsome fighter to remember in the minds of fight fans.
The name wouldn't have had the same ring to it pre-Mike Tyson, but as is it's gotta be one of the better Boxer names ever.
In fact I wouldn't doubt that the name may be a part of his popularity. The name is damn near unforgettable, and immediately makes you think "Fighter"
