moving around in the ring

Post by Yuzo »

when you walk forward, you put one foot in front of the other foot, and, when you walk backward, you put one heel behind the other heel. forward. backward. but when you point your hip sideways the same thing is true. only you dont go forward or backward. you go sideways. left. right.

Image

see how that works?

when you point your hip sideways and you put one foot in front of the other foot you go to your right.

Image

when you point your hip sideways and you put one heel behind the other heel you go to your left.

Image

once you get your hip pointed you can go both ways.

how you turn a guy is, whichever way you go, he has to turn to get you back into view. he wont turn and you end up behind his back. so he has to turn, or you disappear.

Image

now he cant just come in. he has to readjust and start all over.

when you are going to your right you are going away from his right hand by creating extra distance.

Image

but when you are going the other way, you may panic, cause you may think you may get too near his right hand. heres what you do.

the way to create extra distance is to get into your skip and skip, as a southpaw, away from his right hand. its a move willie pep used to do a lot. it creates a lot of space for you from a right hand when you think you may want to have some more space from a right hand.

Image

skip away from his right hand, create your extra distance, then press down on your front foot and twist and swing over your back foot in the same motion to get your hip pointed back sideways.

heres how to move around in the ring and jab.

to throw your jab, push off of your back foot, and, in the same motion, slide your front foot forward.

Image

now to move, on the end of your fully extended jab, press down on your front foot, and, in the same motion, swing over your back foot.

Image

once you swing over your back foot, press down on your back foot, and swing over your front foot.

Image

the trick is, you throw your jabs whenever you can press down on your front foot, and whenever you press down on your front foot, you swing over your back foot.

Image

you time all your jabs to your front foot.

Image

now to jab going the other way, you wont have to time your jabs to the rhythm of each foot step. theres no trick. you just jab.

Image

you take a guy out for a nice walk and you just jab.
