Peter McDonagh Back From Ban, May 12 In Bolton

Peter McDonagh will fight again next month after having his British Boxing Board of Control ban lifted early.

The former three-weight Irish champion is set to come back on May 12, exclusively live on Channel 5.

McDonagh, 40, was banned by the Board in the wake of the pre-fight antics when he beat Shayne Singleton last September, as part of the undercard to Hughie Fury’s unsuccessful world title challenge against then-WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker.

But ‘The Connemara Kid’ will make his comeback on the same card as Fury’s return against Sam Sexton.

Fury is challenging the British champion for the Lonsdale belt at the Premier Suite at the home of Bolton Wanderers, the Macron Stadium –– and McDonagh (28-28-1, 3 KOs) is set to come up against international opposition on the card.

German-based Italian Davide Doria will be the man in the opposite corner on the night, with the hope that a fringe title can be secured and added to the clash.

The 34-year-old unsuccessfully challenged for the vacant Global Boxing Union super-welterweight title as recently as last November and was in action in March when he scored a unanimous decision victory over Adnan Zilic.

Norwich Players Backing Sam Sexton To Shock Hughie Fury

British Heavyweight Champion Sam Sexton received a big boost ahead of his title defence against Hughie Fury on Saturday 12th May at the Macron Stadium, Premier Suite, Bolton when star players from Norwich City visited his gym.

Sexton is hard in training for his showdown with Fury, exclusively live on free-to-air Channel 5, but he was thrilled to open his Pro Box Gym to Christoph Zimmermann, Onel Hernandez and Louis Thompson for a special training session.

The Norwich players have their own big showdown this Saturday against Leeds in the last Carrow Road home game of the Championship season and were eager to get in some final training.



Sexton is delighted Norwich City is supporting him in title defence and he knows it could be a long and hard battle against former World title challenger Fury, but a win is crucial to keep on track for his dream world title shot.

“It was great to see the lads come down to the gym today, it’s a bit different to their usual training regime and hopefully it is something that they can add to their programme that will show some benefits,” Said Sexton.

“I’ve got two left feet on the football pitch so I hope they don’t ask me to come down to the training ground!”

“This is an important title defence against a very tough and hard challenger in Fury. He’ll be hungry and looking to get back into the World title frame by winning the British title. For me I need to win for my own World title ambition so it’s a must win fight and I’ll do everything I can to make sure I win."

Yusuf Safa Plans To Make Fireworks

Big-hitting Yusuf Safa aims to put on a hard-hitting performance for free-to-air Channel 5 viewers when he fights again on Saturday 12th May at the Macron Stadium, Premier Suite, in Bolton, on the undercard of Sam Sexton v Hughie Fury’s British Heavyweight Title clash.

The super-featherweight prospect made his pro-debut on Channel 5 and announced his arrival with a devastating second round TKO of seasoned veteran Anwar Alfadli in May 2014 that made boxing pundits and fans sit up and take notice of the exciting youngster.

Safa, 24, now with a perfect 7-0 record, is thrilled to be back on terrestrial TV screens in an 8-round contest and is promising to put on a show for the fans as he heads towards his first title fight.

“Knowing that eyes across the nation will be watching me on Channel 5 is a scary thought, but it gives me the buzz to put on something special,” Said Safa.

“I’m on a big show headlined by the British Heavyweight Championship between Sexton and Fury so that demands that I raise my game and show what I can do,”

Safa’s incredible childhood story saw him flee the Civil War in Kabul, Afghanistan, when he was just 5 years old to relocate in Bexleyheath where he joined a nearby amateur boxing club.

He said, “My parents had to go through a lot of struggle on my behalf to get me here to England,”

“We left during the Civil War in 1999 and I can remember back then it was a very tough and hard life. It was a very dangerous place to live, but coming to England really changed my life for the better and especially finding boxing has given me opportunities that I wouldn’t have had if I stayed in Kabul,”

My own view is that Hughie learnt in the loss that he can mix it at top level and we'll see him sit on his punches more.

Hughie could win a RTD. Or referee stoppage. Depending on how Sexton fights, who knows. There may be a knockdown too..

There's always a chance this could be a snoozer but I fancy Hughie to get Sexton out of there some point after the midway stage, Sexton deserved the win over Cornish but Cornish was poor and I think he hurt Sexton slightly a couple of times, I like Sexton I remember him winning Prizefighter nearly 10 years ago, there's a great piece on him in this months BM, he's one of the games good guys

I don't think he has the quality to beat Fury though, Hughie has his critics and he can be a bit flat and one paced but he is a skilled boxer and I think he'll improve, I was absolutely leathered when I watched the Parker fight, so leathered that I thought he got the decision over Parker the following morning, I had him winning the fight pretty comfortably and thought the judges agreed

I do remember the fight being diabolical though, still boxings about levels as they say and I can see Fury stopping Sexton

Hughie Fury Says No 'Fake Hype' Needed For Sexton Clash



Never ones for artificial animosity or empty threats, Team Fury were full of respect towards the belt-holder at Thursday's final press conference in the lavish surroundings of Bolton Town Hall.

Hughie said: "It's about getting in that ring. It doesn't matter what happens - you've got to prepare for everything in a fight.

"Sam seems like a decent man and I respect him outside of the ring. When the bell goes in there, it's a different story. Everything goes out of the window.

"I've got no interest in disrespecting anyone. Anyone who gets in that ring is risking their life. It takes one punch and you could be in a coma or whatever else. I've never been brought up to disrespect anyone anyway.

"Some people get very excited when someone throws bottles, water or chucks tables up in the air. I see no point in it."

Peter Fury went further and believes the public are becoming wiser to promotion tactics and that the sport could be moving away from the kind of staged fracas that often verge on pantomime.

Peter Fury said: "99% of it is fake. They're trying to sell stuff and it's fake. I don't like fake things so I'd rather people let their fists do the talking.

"It's going to be an interesting fight and that's the end of it. Both men will have to take punches and I'm looking forward to seeing Hughie's improvement."
