Commonwealth Opponent Change For Liam Cameron

Post by DHPromotions »

Liam Cameron, 20-5 (8), will now defend his Commonwealth Middleweight Title against Nicky Jenman on April 27 at the Ice Sheffield Arena following Danny Butler’s withdrawal from the contest.

With the show televised live on Freesports (Freeview 95, Freesat 252, Sky 424, BT 95, Talk Talk 95), southpaw Jenman steps into the fray having fought most recently in March, losing a tight decision for the IBO Continental Middleweight Title against Andrew Robinson.

With 10 defeats from 31 outings, the Brighton fighter – a former Southern Area Middleweight Champion – knows this is his big opportunity and will be determined to cause an upset in Cameron’s Sheffield backyard.

Liam, who won the Commonwealth crown with an eighth round KO of Sam Sheedy last October, will have to put in a similar determined shift if he is to retain his belt, with promoter Dennis Hobson – currently in Tenerife – warning that Jenman has the ability and determination to upset Cameron’s recently revitalised career.

“I got a call from Danny Butler’s manager,” revealed Hobson, “who said, ‘I’ve got a problem with Danny’. I haven’t got to the bottom of what the issue is, and I’m not sure it’s just an injury, but I didn’t hang about to be honest with just a couple of weeks to go. I knew when I got off the phone we had to find someone else.

“I’m sat in Tenerife thinking about my contacts and one of them is Jon Pegg, who manages Nicky Jenman. I’ve been following Nicky because he just lost an IBO Title fight in controversial circumstances. I like Nicky’s attitude, he was one of the people we were looking at to fight Liam originally because he’s always in good fights, and if you’re not prepared physically and mentally then you’ll struggle against him.

“So, it’s a great opportunity for Nicky and he’s taken the fight with both hands. I don’t think, in England, at this short notice we could have got anyone better who will put up a great fight. If Liam isn’t on top of his game then Nicky will expose him, it will be a great television fight and this is a good test for Liam. He has all the ability but if he doesn’t turn up with the same attitude he had against Sheedy then he would struggle against both Danny Butler and Nicky Jenman. We’ll find out after the first round what sort of Liam Cameron has turned up.

“Liam is a very experienced amateur, an ABA champion, he has great pedigree and if he can’t handle an opponent change at short notice then he’s not the fighter we all think he is. I think Liam will handle it well, he’ll cope because he can adapt but he has to have the right attitude.”

Dennis Hobson Promotions presents Liam Cameron defending his Commonwealth Middleweight Title against Brighton’s Nicky Jenman at the Ice Sheffield Arena (S9 5DA) on April 27. Also appearing will be Doncaster’s Craig Derbyshire defending his Central Area Super Flyweight Title against Sheffield’s Tommy Frank.

Can Nicky Jenman cause a shock against Liam Cameron on April 27? The Brighton fighter certainly believes so.

Jenman challenges champion Cameron for his Commonwealth Middleweight Title at the Ice Sheffield Arena – Cameron’s home city - following Danny Butler’s late withdrawal, with the show broadcast live on Freesports (Freeview 95, Freesat 252, Sky 424, BT 95, Talk Talk 95).

‘Cannonball’ Cameron seized the crown last October in dramatic fashion, stopping fellow ‘Steel City’ fighter Sam Sheedy in eight action-packed rounds, also in front of the Freesports cameras. The former ABA champion, 20-5 (8), and his team, are now looking to push on and hopeful that a successful first defence of the Commonwealth belt will open up other title opportunities.

Southpaw Jenman, in action late March when losing an IBO Continental Middleweight Title bout to Andrew Robinson by a majority decision, insists he will be in good nick on fight night. The 32-year-old, may have lost 10 of 31 outings, but says he will thrive having no pressure on his shoulders and warns he has good ‘away’ form on his ledger.

“I’m absolutely over the moon to get this opportunity,” said Jenman, who works full time as a scaffolder but begins his day with a 4am training run. “From my last fight against Andrew Robinson, which I thought I did enough to win, I didn’t think I’d be back in the mix. So, this is a really good opportunity for me to take.

“After the Robinson fight, I was back in the gym the next day, and I’m always in the gym all year round. So, when I got the call for this fight with just a few weeks notice, I thought I’d grab it.

“I haven’t really seen much of Liam. Obviously, I’ve heard of him but I’ve not seen him fight. He’s a tough lad and he’s the champion, so I respect him for that but I want to do my best and cause the upset. I leave my opponents to my management team; I never watched one of Andrew Robinson’s fights, my team came up with a game plan and I thought I won that night. So, we’ll have a good game plan for Liam.

“I’m fine about fighting in Sheffield. I’ve caused upsets away from home. And sometimes it’s nice not to have the pressure [of fighting at home]. I’m the away fighter, they’re expecting me to lose but my attitude is that I’ve nothing to lose and lots to gain. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a tough lad and a champion but I’m in the wrong game if I’m going to there to make up the numbers. I’ll put on a good show and want to cause the upset.”

Ive never heard of Jenman before, just had a look at his record, he's been in with some good fighters but he's always lost and been KO'd a few times as well, Langford stopped him and he was outpointed by Arnfield, I cant see Cameron having too much difficulty in getting him out of there, especially if he lands the type of left hooks to the body which Sheedy couldn't cope with, Cameron was excellent that night and I'm expecting another good stoppage against Jenman

Promoter Dennis Hobson says boxing fans can expect to see two top-quality title fights when they tune into Freesports (Freeview 95, Freesat 252, Sky 424, BT 95, Talk Talk 95) on April 27. Hobson linked up with the free-to-air broadcaster last year and his show at the Ice Sheffield Arena is the third to be aired by the growing sports channel.

Topping the bill will be local fighter Liam Cameron, who defends his Commonwealth Middleweight belt against Nick Jenman. A former ABA champion, Liam snatched the title last October in a barnstorming performance against Sam Sheedy, stopping his local rival in eight exciting rounds.

‘Cannonball’ Cameron, 20-5 (8), won the Commonwealth strap at the third attempt, after two previous losing assaults at super-middleweight. The 27-year-old is convinced though that he has learned from those reverses and is promising he will give Jenman the toughest night of his career.

Jenman, 20-10-1 (3), enters the contest as a late replacement for Danny Butler, who pulled out earlier this month. The Brighton fighter, who also doubles as a scaffolder in his day job, believes he will thrive fighting away from home, and with no pressure on his shoulders, and is warning the home fans to expect an upset.

Chief support to the main contest comes in the shape of an all-Yorkshire derby battle – Doncaster’s Craig Derbyshire defends his Central Area Super Flyweight Title against Sheffield’s Tommy Frank. At 6-0, Tommy is the rising star touted for bigger things, but he faces a stiff test against his local rival. Craig, 5-25-3 (1), has been in with some top fighters – including Charlie Edwards, Sunny Edwards and Don Broadhurst – and will use his vast ring know-how to keep hold of his belt.

“The outcome of this fight will all depend on which Liam Cameron turns up,” stated Hobson. “After his devastating display against Sheedy, I’d like to think that will be the Liam Cameron that turns up. He has all the pedigree and ability, but sometimes he’s just gone through the motions. I do think he’s matured though and he has the capability to win something a lot bigger. Liam is the favourite but he has sometimes gone into his shell and Jenman’s style means he’ll be in your face, because he comes to fight. If Liam does go into his shell again then he’s going to struggle.

“Nicky has grabbed this opportunity with both hands, and he fought quite recently, so he’s in good shape. From the first bell, he will give it a right go. Because of his character, he will turn the fact he’s away from home to his advantage. He won’t be fazed going into Liam’s backyard and he doesn’t have the pressure of fighting at home. I think this is a cracking fight. It’s a great fight for TV too; another exciting fight for Freesports.

“Tommy Frank against Craig Derbyshire for the Central Area Title is another really good fight. Tommy is a stylish fighter, but Craig will come and have a go. Tommy has been on quite a few of our shows, and I do rate him but this isn’t a walkover for him. Craig is the champion and he has a lot of pride. Even though he has a mixed record, he’ll be desperate to hold onto his title. He’s sold a few tickets and he’s not just coming to pick up a few quid. So, this is another cracking fight for the fans and viewers.”

The public weigh-in for the show will take place at 1pm on Thursday April 26th at the Ice Sheffield Arena.

Just caught Cameron's fight with Jenman on DailyMotion , cracking shot to finish, textbook jab/cross right at the bell of the 2nd round, Jenman got up but Terry O'Connor decided he couldn't continue despite the round being over, Jenman did hit the canvas pretty hard but I personally thought he should've been allowed to carry on
