Bryant Jennings vs Joey Dawejko to meet on 4/28 ESPN

Post by sweetviolenturge »

I think this is a really good crossroads match-up.
Jennings has gone 3-0 vs mediocre ( at best ) opponents since his return from the layoff he took following his KO loss to Luis Ortiz & Dawejko is on a seven-bout unbeaten streak since his competitive points loss to Amir Mansour a couple of years ago. Although two of those contests were draws against less than stellar opposition. Which shows that he still hasn't quite gotten past his tendency to fight down to his opponent's level. So, although Jennings should be a clear favorite in this one, it's a good opportunity for Dawejko to rise to the occasion & perhaps put himself into the world ratings.
It will definitely be interesting to see if Jennings is still world class while battling a tough, skilled, ( hopefully ) very motivated opponent. Just as it will be intriguing to see how Dawejkp responds to another big opportunity. On paper, it looks like a damned good contest is on tap for the end of next month. And, I, for one, am looking forward to it.

Seems reasonable, but Jennings will probably be a heavy favorite. This is like the intermediate step between bums and his next top 20 opponent. I hope Jennings gets a shot at someone like Martin or Hammer after this.

this is a step up in that i think dawejko can go the distance or at least not get stopped early like the other comeback opponents, but i really dont expect dawejko to win pretty much any rounds

ill bet he just mainly covers up and if he goes the distance ill bet hed be exhausted and only barely made it to the end

dawjeko is not a guy i trust to put in a good fight. he often seems like he didnt train at all and hes clearly not in shape. lackluster describes so many of his performances.

hes actually got some talent and was world junior champ, but it seems poor training (his training for past fights has simply been his roofing job ive read) and 50+ excess pounds really take there toll

I never understand why this happens in boxing.

Yeah, I realize that some of his 8 non-victories have been the result of poor prefight preparation as he's taken many of them on short notice. But, hopefully, he's had plenty of notice for this one & has taken the opportunity to train seriously for this opportunity against a top ten opponent. It still may not be enough to result in a victory, but we shall see. I think if he's motivated & is in proper condition that Dawejko can extend Jennings the distance & give him a tough go of it. He may even be able to outwork Jennings if Jennings gets caught overlooking him.

I don't understand why Bryant Jennings a guy who has beaten a World Title challenger in Szpilka and held his own against Wladimir Klitschko is being taken down such a slow road back.

Surely he's ready for tougher than this? No disrespect to Joey intended, but he's just not at this level.

IMO, if Dawejko shows up in shape & is motivated then he should give Jennings a good fight. He's a durable guy with a decent chin & has only been stopped on one occasion by the then-future IBF champion Charles Martin in a bout that Dawejko took with little to no training whatsoever.
In his other bout with a big puncher in Amir Mansour he hung tough with him & extended him in a competitive ten rounder. So, barring any cuts, I fully expect him to do the same vs Jennings.

you make szpilka's pointless fight with Wilder seem a lot more historic than it really should be.

lets not forget the way things are going Kyataro fujimoto will be due a shot soon
