OT: Tottenham vs. Arsenal

After last weekend's draw, it seems Tottenham may edge Arsenal for the fourth Champions League spot this year - seems like quite something given how erratic Spurs have been in recent years.

Can someone brief a former North Londoner why the Spurs are so good this year? Why does Arsenal perform so poorly in the Premier League - is it the focus on Europe? Finally: what are the chances that Arsenal will still catch Tottenham?

Spurs are so good because Martin Jol is a fantastic Coach and he's brought in Quality Players that want to play for him.
He Had a good reputation in Holland with RKC all his former player's say great thing's about him.
The best thing that happened to Spurs was Santini Quiting like that and Jol assuming the mantle they have never looked back!

Quality signings and a quality coach. I think Davids has been a big influence

Arsenal are obviously not the same side without the engine of and presence of Viera but all the same they could pull off a Euro upset.

Imagine the look on Tottenham fans faces if they get 4th place and Arsenal win the Champions league, Tottenham have to go into the UEFA cup then.

No it wasn't. Liverpool and Everton (4th placed) played in CL qualifier matches.

Liverpool made the QF this year, Everton lost to Villareal in the qualifier.

No it wasn't. Liverpool and Everton (4th placed) played in CL qualifier matches.

Liverpool made the QF this year, Everton lost to Villareal in the qualifier.

So if Tottenham finishes 4th they are in the qualifier round no matter what?

He retired from reffereeing in Seria A because signed an advertising deal with car makers opel, who also sponsor AC Milan (i think), which caused a bit of controversy. He was then picked as the referee for the Everton- Villereal game, and then retired.

I would imagine so, but there will probably be a long drawn out meeting to confirm. The Liverpool/Everton issue caught UEFA on the hop and I don't think they confirmed if their decision for such an occurance will forever standing. I cannot imagine them changing it though.

Didn't this hapeen a few seasons ago in Spain as well? Real Madrid finished outside the qualifying places, but won the cup that season so were granted entry at the cost of one of the other teams.

There will only be 4 teams from england in the competition next year if Arsenal win the Champions league Spurs are out.
Uefa fucked up last time and it wont Happen again Liverpool / Everton was a one off.
Saying that Barca have there name on that trophy imo so no need to worry yet spurs fan's.

I'm a Spurs fan and I think we have done great this year. On the other hand, Arsenal have been so inconsistent (Spurs like).

But to be fair, Arsenal have had a lot of injuries, especially in defence. It took some getting use to not having Vieira in the side, and all their problems earlier in the season seemed to be defensive orientated (30+ goal diff, but they have lost 11 games in the league).

Since Wenger realised that Cygan is a waste of space and moved Flamini to left back their results have changed dramatically. Not having Ashley Cole in the team is a big loss, I rate him to be the best LB in the world at the moment.

I may be a bit biased as a Spurs fan but what the hell was Wenger on about on Saturday?

Remember that this is the man who has spent his whole career at Arsenal saying "I didn't see it" whenever there was any contoversy on the pitch and when another manager/coach says the same thing he brands them liars.

If we are to listen to AW's ranting, every time a player falls over and is "injured" - no matter how seriously, play should be stopped!

I've had a huge amount of respect for what he has done at Highbury but after the weekend that is disappearing fast. The man is a hypocrite and should do the decent thing and apologise for his remarks. I've yet to hear one single pundit take his side on this one.

It's a shame that wenger is so petulant.

He is a fantastic coach who gets his teams to play the 'spurs' way.Its just a shame that he acts like a child at times.I understand it can get a bit heated at times(especially north london derby!)but his latest outburst is outrageous.He was nothing short of disgraceful.

This guy has consistently filled his team with pure and utter cheats in players such as pires,reyes,van persie,gilberto etc....these guys spend half of games rolling around on the floor after diving,trying to cheat fellow pro's and con refsIt's fair to say that other managers don't seem to particularly like wenger,due to his whingeing ways.

The reason us yids r doing so well this season is down to martin jol and the fact we finally have some youth in the side.Guys that can play for 90 minutes,not old washed up has beens we were being fed for the previous 10-15 yrs.WE have bought wisely,paying small fees for britains best youngsters,giving them a chance and letting them develop ie.lennon,dawson,carrick etc.Add a few experienced players such as davids,tanio,stalteri,all of whom have played champs league football regularly,and that gives the squad a nice balance.
Contrary to what most people say,spurs have not spent hardly anything,so there is no chance of us being a new leeds or newcastle,teams that completly overspend searching for success that they ain't likely to get for another 50 yrs!!

Spurs are back,and will be challenging at the right end of the table for years to come!!

Last time they were really good was with Klinsmann, if I'm not mistaken. When I lived in London in the late 90s their best player was Ginola, but they lacked a striker who would convert regularly Ginola's assists.

Even then they did'nt manage a finish no better than 7th.This side they have put together are better than anything since the days of linekar and gascoigne.
