Also Joe Frazier against George "Scrap Iron" Johnson from the Olympic Auditorium at about the same time. Joe pummeled Scrap Iron for 10 rounds, but Johnson was apparently so elated that he went the distance that he performed a jig in the ring at the final bell.
The first fight that I vividly recall watching was a 1967 Olympic Auditorium clash between then unbeaten teenage lightweight hotshot Mando Ramos and a tough Korean named Suh Kang Il.
I was a huge Ramos fan even though I had only read about him in the newspapers and this was the first fight of his that I actually witnessed.
It was razor close but the older, more experienced Korean came away with a unanimous verdict, snapping Ramos' unbeaten skein at 17.
Somehow, the very partial pro-Ramos Olympic crowd didn't see fit to riot after the decision was announced.

I don't think I've ever seen a riot occur over an Olympic Games boxing decision. But the Olympic Auditorium. I think riots were invented there.

All is forgiven.
Just post a 10 page analysis detailing the great bouts at the Olympic AUDITORIUM versus the top ones seen at the Olympic GAMES.
You have more than a century of outstanding fights to choose from so it should be a snap for you.

But it was Jimmy Lennon SENIOR, not JUNIOR who was the classy, tuxedo dressed ring announcer at the Olympic Auditorium.
But I won't mention it or rub it in. Proceed.

Re: First Fight You Can Remember?
I can't recall the fight, but I got into boxing in '94 during Hamed's rise to fame. For those of us too young for pre-jail Tyson and Eubank-Benn, he was the main attraction for a lot of us amateur kids for a couple of years.
He lost us when he went PPV, as did every other big-name boxer soon enough. I cooled on boxing for a bit in those years, only following the non-PPV guys until Audley's gold won us some more free coverage. Alas, the cycle repeated when the likes of Froch and Haye ended up on PPV.

Re: First Fight You Can Remember?
It was either Ali-Mildenberger or Ali-Bonavena, I can't remember which, I just remember a burly white guy showing incredible courage against an obviously more talented Muhammad Ali.

Mine was Sibson v Hagler, remember being fascinated by the build up and how intimidating Hagler was, fell in love with boxing then aged 12 and that was quickly followed by both Bruno and McGuigan and following their rise to world titles.
Re: First Fight You Can Remember?
And how could you not be hooked?
That was some fight.
I was snuck in the pub at 15 to watch it. Too scared to go to the bar for beersies in case they kicked me out and I missed the fight
Re: First Fight You Can Remember?
Holmes - Spinks 2. I remember it being on telly and wondering how come they said Spinks had won.
My love for boxing bit soon after when watching Rocky 2, and the first fight I consciously sat down to watch was McGuigan vs Cabrera. An early memory is the classic between Dave McAuley and Fidel Bassa. Absolute epic.

Tim Witherspoon v Tony Tubbs.

Nice post Bennie! Two fights that showed us Ali's mastery, even considering the lack of depth for the opponents. IMHO!!
Re: First Fight You Can Remember?
I remember my Dad (RIP) saying that he thought Spinks had a chance in the first fight because of his youth and Strength. Not power punching strength but a young man's strength if you get the point. I love the boxing memories that my dad was a prevalent part off.semtexreilly wrote: ↑03 May 2018, 03:43 Ali v spinks 2,was very young at the time but remember my old man nearly in tears when he won the title for the 3rd time![]()

Re: First Fight You Can Remember?
Memory is fading a bit but I do recall Bruce Woodcock vs Joe Baksi for what was deemed to be the heavyweight title. Roy Ankrah ( the human ŵindmill) taking Ronnie Clayton”s Empire featherweight crown remains a shocker of a memory even now.
Re: First Fight You Can Remember?
I don't have any memory, buy I did look it up. Woodcock was the British HW Champ.
Re: First Fight You Can Remember?
Ali Vs Dunn I think. Ali knocking a really pale bloke over again and again, it must have been Dunn! I would have been 5. I spent the next 5 years watching Ali looking like he was losing but actually winning, remember Spinks fights vividly and cried when he fought Larry Holmes. So yeah, it was my dads obsession with Ali that got me into the sport.
