Hey guys I haven't seen that fight. What the hell happend to Ray on that fight? How the hell he lost agaisnt Holmes?
was it a good fight?
Mercer vs Holmes, what happend?
I remember the fight; Mercer came in overconfident, probably looking ahead to a big payday and title shot against Holyfield, which he would have gotten if he hadn't blown the Holmes fight. (Holmes got the title shot instead.)
He was a step slow all night, and being a step slow for Ray Mercer means he's no quicker than a 43-year-old Larry Holmes. Mercer in one middle round almost had him beat, trapping him on the ropes, but Holmes slugged his way out of it and then said "I'm not Tommy Morrison!", in reference to Mercer's last fight where he trapped and KO'd Morrison while behind on points.
All in all, I think he was just looking ahead and paid for it. And paid dearly, because after that fight, he didn't fight worth a damn against anyone until he faced Lennox Lewis four years later. How in the hell did Mercer ever lose to Jesse Ferguson (with a title shot on the line, again) is a better question. At least Holmes was a creditable fighter.

In a way, this is one of my favorite fights, and I look at the tape from time to time to see an old fighter totally outsmart a younger and probably stronger guy. At one point Holmes actually stands in the corner...Mercer's,....sticks out his left and talks to Mercer's cornermen!!!!..and Mercer just stands there looking bewildered. From round one,Holmes looked as if he had not a single doubt that he'd handle Mercer with ease.
Sometimes Holmes would say "I'll give him a little of this..and some of that" when talking about an upcoming fight, and this is THE example of what he meant.
Now I've got the bug to dig for the tape and look at it again.

I saw that fight, it was part of a heavyweight trippleheader wich also included Witherspoon-Gonzales and Holyfield-Czyz. It was my first trip to Madison Square Garden, the athmosphere was very patriottic [U.S.A.! U.S.A.!] in favor of Mercer who fought an excellent fight. Though I came over to see Lewis get knocked out, I kinda thought he deserved the split decision afterwards. Very good fight by Mercer though, actually his best fight ever in my opinion.
