Hagler TKO's Hearns?

Post by jpspice »

Why is Hearns defeat against Hagler called a TKO? If that is a "technical" knock out, what's a "knockout"?

They're ALL knockouts... The word knockout comes from Boxing... It doesn't mean knocked unconscious... It originally meant "knocked out of the fight" ... In other words, if you were judged unable to continue because of your physical condition.... If your corner stopped it... If you said NO MAS and quit... if you didn't beat the count.... if you beat the count but staggered around (as was the case in Hearns vs Hagler)..... or if you were knocked cold.... They were all knockouts. A technical knockout is anytime you beat the count... If you fail to beat the count that's a real KO to some... Tommy got up at 9.

If a boxer retires because of an injury that's not associated with a legal punch -- I don't think that needs to go on your KO record, but it does... Vitali Klitschko came into the Chris Byrd fight with a sore shoulder thinking he could fight through it... The shoulder started getting much worse and his rotator cuff assembly split in half.... But it's still on Byrd's KO record.

Hearns beat the count, the ref stopped on Hearns' inability to continue, as he was on wobbly legs.

Like Dr Duke said, Hearns DID beat the count. He couldn't stand up straight at all and was going to fall over but he used every bit of instinct and strength he had to at least get up and the referee immediately waved it off and he fell in the ref's arms.

one of the most overrated fights ever, was pretty much a one-sided beatdown for all but a minute or two, hearns legs were gone very quickly

Considering Hagler ate BOMBS from Hearns, Mugabi, Roldan, Hamsho, Duran, Antuonferno, etc.... Only to come back to win (9/10 by knockout) I believe he'd have survived anything Jackson would have thrown, and have only fought back harder and harder, with him getting the knockout.

one of the best uncompetitive fights. hagler bashed up hearns for at least 2 thirds of it. i was shocked when i finally watched it. it had been talked up so much so i couldnt believe that it was pretty much hagler beating up a rubbery legged hearns, way less 2 way competitive action then i expected

the fight has become a legend beyond what it really was

TKO's to me have always been:

1 - Cuts and/or other injuries
2 - Retiring in one's corner
3 - a chick ALMOST hot but you want to f$CK (get it? A knockout, A tko...ok...ferget it.

So Technically you got stopped. um..except the last one hopefully.

I disagree. Not tremendously, but I do. Hearns cut Hagler and kinda 'stunned' him a couple or three times. You can tell with Hagler when he's 'stunned.' He kinda gets pissed off!!! This fight really was three rounds of fury by both fighters, albeit more from Hagler.

hagler was at most slight buzzed very early on, in that clip that gets shown repeatedly as if all fight were like that, but haglar takes over very quickly. hearns blew his load and was very shaky even in round one, then hagler beats him up for the rest of it

I'll watch it again, but I remember it being more violent on both men's part. It was so short...nah forget it...not worth the post.

That is, by and large hearns' style. Hearns (corner) took a gamble and in retrospect it was a bad idea. If you can hurt a guy bad in the first round, that can carry you for a while in the respect dept. I think he should have stayed away from Hagler and spread out those loaded right hands but he made the mistake of many others who tried and failed against Hagler. On the other hand dispatching Duran early was probably a good idea(although Duran was not in good shape for the fight) had Duran gotten past the right hand it may have been a different outcome.

Oh Yea, I forgot Tommy was up at 9. Although still absent from planet Earth!
I agree with the "great fight" crowd.

it was good but massively overrated. tennyson vs ward just from today was plenty of fun, had bigger turns in the action and the loser there was far more competitive then hearns was.

someone tell me at what stretch in the second and third rounds hearns at all looks seriously threatning or not like hes already seriously fading . in reality his legs were already going in the first and he was getting beaten up . he basically shot his load in the first 2 minutes and that was pretty much it for him

the fights legend seems to keep growing well beyond what actually happened

Maybe Wilt was just too good an athlete for Ali to sign the contract... Maybe it wasn't tallness that scared Ali to death, but being too damned good... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mF57P1uUG0s

Vitali accepted the outcome... Then he went into extensive surgery to have his rotator cuff repaired...

But he wasn't knocked out of the fight... His severed rotator cuff rendered him unable to continue not head trauma.

Fact: Wilt is so tall they had to bury him 12 feet deep because it took twice as much dirt to keep him down. THAT'S HOW TALL HE WAS.

He also once won the MLB Home Run Derby, but all the other players were like "Come on man, you're so tall we're gonna look bad on TV standing next to you" so he humbly agreed to have the footage burned. What a guy!

Excuses are what you use when you lose and can't deal with it. Or you're wrong and can't stomach it. Even Wilder didn't harp on having the flu during training, resulting in him coming in 10 - 15 LBS lighter than usual. Just saying. So if the post recipient says ok, it doesn't change the outcome. Same. I saw this well after it happened. I guess live it would have been something. I much prefer Leonard Hagler. Probably my favourite all time fight. I even like Leonard Hearns 2. Don't care that they were older and slower they still traded nice clean bombs.

It's not an excuse... Vitali lost the Byrd Fight... The reason he lost is his rotator cuff assembly severed in 2... He's not the only boxer who ever lost due to an injury.... He would easily have beaten Byrd if he was 100%.... Wilder came in 6 or 7 pounds lighter but that didn't stop him from beating a fat old man.

Everyone knows Vitali would have beaten Byrd without the injury.. Some are just lying their ass off about it.

You're posting a lot of insane nonsense as usual...

Chamberlain was VERY FAR from the tallest NBA player in History... He was the BEST NBA player in History and holds more career and game records than any other player... No other player came close to scoring 100 points in a game... No other player pulled down 55 rebounds in a game and nobody else ever came close to dominating on both ends of the court in the manner Chamberlain did.. He wasn't anywhere near the tallest.

Being only 1 inch over 7 feet tall isn't even within 5 inches of being the tallest Basketball Player in NBA History... Nobody EVER HEARD of the tallest player in NBA History because he wasn't any good... There are currently 36 NBA players over 7 feet tall... Nobody heard of most of them because they're terrible players... 1 of every 74 seven-footers makes it to the NBA and they're generally uncoordinated and can't play that well... There haven't been any more Kareem's or Wilt's.

That's where you're f*cking your facts up pal. He was SO TALL that he actually won the World Series, The Daytona 500, The NHL Stanley Cup, AND The FIFA World Cup in Soccer all in the same year...oh and you bet your ass he won the NBA Finals too.

Height isn't measured in Inches and Centimeters, it's measured in Athletic Greatness, and therefore you might as well say Wilt was 20 feet tall, but I once saw him hit 75 Homeruns, Throw 192 Strike outs, Beat everybody in a Nascar race by a full 5 laps!

And he even scored 17 points on the ICE! BY HIMSELF! When the other team sent out their enforcer to pick a Hockey Fight with him, he started skating up to him and then just shouted back "I can't...he's too tall"

What a man!
