WBSS Set To Unveil Bantamweight and Super Lightweight Tournaments

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

ESPN reports that the organizers are poised to announce bantamweight and super lightweight tournaments, each with multiple candidates already lined up.

The 140-pound tournament will likely include Regis Prograis and a pair of previously ordered bouts, Kiryl Relikh vs. Eduard Troyanovsky and Ivan Baranchyk vs. Anthony Yigit, in the quarterfinals. Bantamweight, meanwhile, features world champions Ryan Burnett, Zolani Tete, and Emmanuel Rodriguez.

One would hope that the winner of Naoya Inoue vs. Jamie McDonnell will participate as well.

There’s a generally reliable Twitter page claiming that there will be a press conference tomorrow announcing everything, but I can’t find an original source, so take that with a grain of salt.

Any particular faces you expect/would like to see fill the other three super lightweight and five bantamweight slots?

The bantamweight one looks really good especially if the winner of inoue McDonnell enters. maybe if its a close fight then the loser can enter as well. also the winner of the wbc title fight will hopefully enter meaning all 4 belts will be in the tournament. the final 2 spots can go to solis and someone who would be stepping up like moloney.

the lightweight tournament line up is ok so far but for it to be really good the final 3 names need to be good. hopefully the winner of tayler vs postel winner of flanagan vs hooker and someone like mario barrios.

I would like to see ex-WBA champ Zhanat Zhakiyanov of Kazakhstan added to the 118 lb tournament. He went the distance with Ryan Burnett during their IBF/WBA unification. Let's see if he bounces back.

For 140 lb, I would like to see Hiroki Okada of Japan added to the tournament.

I've heard the WBC champ won't be in the 140.lb tourney, but Martin's only ranked on the WBC. Why is he getting a title shot from the IBF/WBA?

I don't think either Arum or the PBC guys want to be in any tournament. Top Ranks officials outright said before they don't like the Superfly thing and want their guy (Jerwin Ancajas) to face easy competition, so WBSS is even worse. They won't touch it.

Crap that! ESPN+ could have picked up TV rights for this..

Ancajas hopefully will fight Kal Yafai after his next fight assuming he wins too.

It's a shame that promoters have got this hold on certain fighters.

Like Hearn let Cox go to the WBSS, obviously he's not an attraction for Hearn.. Arum doesn't believe in his fighters..

Funny thing is, his team didn't want to fight Jonas Sultan either. Pulled the old "We're both Filipino!" and tried to duck him too. But obviously Sultan doesn't give a sh-t about that and just wants his titleshot.

ALA not keen on Sultan vs. Ancajas fight, but will fight if mandated
http://www.sunstar.com.ph/article/406190/

I'm rooting for Sultan to win. Ancajas is a can crusher and being severely protected. But because Western fans are so un-used to these "new" (unfamiliar) divisions, they've been pushed and just accepted the narrative that Ancajas deserves any sort of adoration. Basically people will believe whatever narrative is being pushed in these lower weights; but you need to do your own research.

It's not been announced yet, but I'm sure it'll be light heavyweight.

Kalle Sauerland has said in each season of the super series that there would be one weight at middleweight or above. He's also said middleweight is off the cards due to Golovkin and Canelo being committed to a rematch during the series, whilst they won't return to super middleweight or cruiserweight immediately and heavyweight seems very impractical at this stage.

Kalle said Cruiserweight could be done again.

Inoue Confirms He’ll Compete in WBSS Bantamweight Tournament

Naoya Inoue made the announcement fight fans wanted to hear about as quickly Friday night as he knocked out Jamie McDonnell.

The newly crowned WBA world bantamweight champion confirmed during a post-fight press conference in Tokyo that he has agreed to participate in the World Boxing Super Series’ bantamweight tournament later this year. The heavily hyped Inoue’s inclusion in the WBBS’ single-elimination, 118-pound tournament should bring plenty of additional attention to it.

The entire field has yet to be officially announced, but WBA “super” champion Ryan Burnett (19-0, 9 KOs), WBO champ Zolani Tete (27-3, 21 KOs) and IBF champ Emmanuel Rodriguez (18-0, 12 KOs) confirmed their participation prior to Inoue’s announcement regarding the WBSS’ bantamweight tournament. Inoue could get the opportunities in that tournament to become the WBA’s true champion at 118 pounds, a distinction that currently belongs to Northern Ireland’s Burnett, and add other titles to his resume.

The WBSS is expected to announce its bantamweight schedule at some point in July. Its 118-pound tournament is expected to start on an unspecified September date.

Now that Inoue has announced his participation, I wonder how many 118 pounders will suddenly and mysteriously withdraw from the tournament.

There has been so many rumours going around recently about the wbss recently but there should be a lot of announcements over next few weeks.

first thing is Gassiev vs Usyk on Saturday 21st July in Moscow then the next day it will be the draw for the next season.

next is the tv deal with dazn. not sure if this has been confirmed already but on the sauerland bros twitter account they were talking about dazn taking over America so its looking very likely.

over the next 8 days the super lightweight fighters will be announced the fighters that im sure will be in the tournament are
Kiryl Relikh
Eduard Troyanovsky
Anthony Yigit
Ivan Baranchyk
Regis Prograis
Ryan Martin
Maurice Hooker

The last place will probably go to someone from the uk probably Terry Flanagan or Robbie Davis jnr.

unfortunately Tayler and Ramirez wont be in the tournament but at least they will be fighting soon

This is everything that will probably be announced this week everything else will be announced the weeks after.

I think Taylor will come on leaps and bounds from that last fight. He'd have taken a lot from that.

if you can say that about taylor you can say it about most the others, doing 12 with postols as good experience as pretty much any of them have

Damn that are very, very good names. Cheering for Inoue in bantam and Baranchyk in light welter, but Prograis would be a favorite probably. These tournament are very good for boxing, Respect to promoters for being able to put together boxers of that caliber :box: :box: :box:

Edit: what is bad, cruiserweight final fight between Usyk and Gassiev did not get enough attention around the world. That is one of most important matches this year :box: :box: :box:
